This is misinformation. The height of terrorism in the Sahel was during the tenure of the failed Operation Barkhane led by France and the UN MINUSMA mission. Instead of going after the insurgents, the French were busy bombing innocent civilians and blowing up weddings (the Bounti massacre in Mali being the most prominent example).

The fact is that France and the West in general will never be allowed back in Sahel and very soon in the entire West Africa. With the election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Senegal has already pivoted away and others will follow.
