Mars is talented, but he does just kind of remix other people's shyt. :pachaha: that song with cardi b sounds like something that would have been on a Black movie soundtrack from 1992. and the song he made that he basically took trinidad james' hook like 2 months after james' song came out.

James got a co writer credit on uptown funk

obviously it was pennies compared to what their white counterparts were getting to perform in front whites, but from the perspective of artist who weren't being fairly paid they were appreciative. Which is why I said the same mistake shouldn't happen twice, yet we still see this today. Black artist actually selling their souls and pandering to whites for pennies,in comparison to what white counterparts are making. At least black artist back then got to keep their soul in tact, just lacked knowledge of contracts or were flat out robbed in most cases.

But it is an insult and rewrite of history, when blacks today try to pretend blacks back then were pushed out of anything,we weren't pushed out of shyt by whites. They stole from us and made money among there people while we made money and saw success among ours.

Now obviously you can't compare black buying power of the 50's to black buying power of today,so there is really no excuse for us to even be tempted to make the same mistakes our predeccessors did, other than pure greed and not seeing the bigger picture. The only difference is there was more black ownership and segregated black communities at the time so our dollars were more likely to go to black people. If we had the heart to segregate ourselves we wouldn't be dying broke today,so thats a mute point, theres no excuse now. They died broke back then because they didn't know how devilish the white man was and had no recourse.
The plantation owner / Jim Crow white man? Really?

:yeshrug: Iggy Azalea never got a pass for being 1 of T.I.'s artists or being managed by Roc Nation.

exactly, people are in here acting like we haven't had a system for years that has worked just fine in regards to white people. Usually it involved the white person being ushered in by a black person with some clout, willing to vouch for them, and the fact they had respect for the culture and were talented. They had to show and prove,or we would just shyt on them and ridicule them and make them the laughing stock of the culture. This system has worked fairly well for all these years, when did we stop becoming the gatekeepers culturally is what we have to ask. We haven't owned alot of these labels for years, but we were still the gatekeepers who these white artist had to make it through. Somehow they can just do black genres and completely bypass having to pass a black smell test first. Who knows, maybe its simply the internet that allows it. Plus we can't forget it was Nicki who partially helped end Iggys career, glad to see Waka and T.I stand united against Lil Xan.

All gatekeeping institutions have been, or are in the process of being destroyed. Unintended consequence of the internet.

It is what it is.

In 1999, no way in hell is some cracked out psychopath on armed robbery sprees rapping about how he "did the race" being heard by 180 million people.

Shyt, he wouldn't even be able to sell that out his trunk.

But now, his boy with a GoPro and a pirated copy of FruityLoops can turn him into a star overnight with enough shock value.

He can tour off one song that's never been played on a single radio station (well, until getting locked up and facing felony murder charges).

His management team can finance his case by selling fukking FREE TAY t-shirts off his twitter that are manufactured in like Bhutan for 10 cents each.

I don't feel any type of way towards Bruno. The man his given credit to old school R&B artist many times, so I don't see it as culture appropriation.

But she is right about he sells/wins awards/mainstream because hes racially ambiguous.

That's a weak point - he's not racially ambiguous like a halsey, Mariah Cary, logic or a slew of Latino singers who could pass for white. Plenty of people thought he was some mixed black dude when he debuted. That ambiguity excuse doesn't fly for someone who looks nothing like a white person. White people don't give ambiguity passes to people who can't possibly pass as them

No lies detected. He has zero black ancestry but is profiting off the labor of black artists and remains silent on topics concerning black people. When push comes to shove he's not going to ride for black people, and as a writer he's average at best.

This what I’m saying. As an artist you’re allowed to be influenced by other great artist.

Rihanna straight ripped one of Tama Impalas track for her last album. Literally the entire song, and that was from their last album.

People just need to shut the fukk up and listen to what you like and stop bytching.

Theres a difference between doing it once in a blue moon(rihanna) and doing it all the damn time (bruno mars)

I aint mad a bruno mars, his music is shyt and he rips on black culture, but he is clearly talented.

Yall (nikkas) allowed this fukkery, as well as this fakkit rap from all the lil uzi fakkits and lil opium overdoses, yall are to blame.

Yall lowered the bar in both rnb, rap, and rocknroll, allowing all these crackers like lil xan, pump, bruno, r.thicke, and Timberlake to come through

Facts.
Its our own fault.
Black people have been making and championing god awful music for coming up to a decade now.
In 2018 white people make better black music than black people.
Whos fault is this?

You act like the majority of black artist put they're necks on the line for black people.

The people who write for him are black.

His racial identity is unclear and a question mark based on appearance. Which is the definition of ambiguity to the T. Which is why hes able to cross boundaries and be so mainstream. I'm not saying the man isn't talented. I'm just saying his appearance makes it a lot easier for him to transcend barriers and be a mega-star.

I love that this conversation is gaining traction but I hate that Bruno is being set up as the fall guy. Call out the real disrespectful, racist, ain’t shyt vultures out here: JLO, Bieber, Timberwolf, post Malone, Miley Cyrus etc. the ones who talk greasy about the culture and black folks. Bruno straight up said yo I appreciate black American culture and how anyone would wanna harm a black life. He doesn’t toe the line, he keeps it all the way 1OO

I had a recent convo with a older guy who absolutely hated Bruno (he knew his music too) and agreed with the cultural appropriation but also blamed society and pop culture and us.

He said same reason Bruno is so successfull is why THE ROCK is the number 1 actor in Hollywood right now.

Everyone loves someone “Blackish” But not BLACK.

We give the Rock the pass so it’s no surprise Bruno gets away with what he does

So who’s really to blame?

Back in the 90s Mariah was loved by everyone Black and white but wouldn’t she be seen as a Vulture in today’s racial climate?

the rock's father is black.....Bruno is not black at all
