Above the fray.
There’s a why folks like Chadwick Boseman went to study theatre and drama at Oxford in the UK. And if I was a serious actor... guess what I’d at least try to do? Right.
Yes.
Rest in Peace to Chadwick Boseman.

But, yes, there was an entire thread here about when he revealed that Phylicia Rashad and Denzel Washington funded Howard Fine Arts students expenses for acting workshop at Oxford.

usually they look for someone who can sing and act for these types of roles. so she probably just had the best audition.
can't hire someone to play whitney who can't even pretend to sing well.
Breh it doesn't matter who they get to play her. We're talking about Whitney. One of the greatest voices ever. I'd just tell them to play the real thing and I'll lip sing. Ain't gonna have me on camera playing myself cuz I'm trying to sing like whittey Huton

Apparently thats what they're doing, but imo, You don't have to be as good as the real thing. just good enough to not butcher her songs. It always ruins immersion for me when a person with a clearly weak speaking voice suddenly sounds like they have pipes during the musical number. all nasally throughout the movie like a urkel then suddenly turn into Barry White during musical numbers.:mjlol:

I have no problem with Brits taking roles here in the US, but for historical films I can understand some of the shade going on. I think the discourse on it isnt as problematic or xenophobic, as theres been plenty of chatter with AA and other white Americans playing foreign figures. But I do think whats unique about this is that there seems to be a bigger percentage of Brits taking these roles compared to others. Sort of like how the NBA is filled with white foreigners instead of white americans.

Solomon Northrop, MLK, Malcom X (Regina King’s film), Harriet Tubman, Fred Hampton and now Aretha Franklin and Harriet Tubman. Im sure if a Frederick Douglass movie was in the works it would go to a Brit. I know part of it is due to the training and the highly developed black film industry in the US that makes a lot more black actors from abroad come here but I think having every historical AA figure played by Brits is just a tad strange.

Edit: And I have nothing against British actors, I think Kaluya and Idris are phenomenal. Its more of a national pride thing. I know the UK wont make an American a Bond for the same reasons.
