If this is true, this is desperation at its highest....10 mill for a guy who has never coached at the college level and whose greatest success came at the hands of a team he didn’t put together...

And damn just listen to this muhfukka’s analysis on talent every Monday night...is this who you want building a roster for you? Because other than a name that these kids who he will be recruiting only know as a commentator, Tennessee played the fukk outta itself....if true

That whole Worley diatribe last week said all that needed to be said about his ability to evaluate talent :mjlol:

:mjlol: Nah. The source on this story is a big-time booster who is connected and predicted what would happen last night a day earlier.

Think Urban Meyer 2011. Remember how a story came out in November 17, 2011 saying Urban Meyer would be the Ohio State head coach. Both Urban and Ohio State denied the reports. Then 2 weeks later after the regular season ended, he was announced as the new Ohio State coach.

This is basically what happened here. Gruden agreed last night to be the new Tennessee head coach. The contract was signed. But nothing will be made public until after the season. So roughly 10 more days of these rumors before it becomes official.

Why would you wait until the end of the season when Gruden could start recruiting for UT right now?

Makes no sense to wait if they’ve actually hired him. Tennessee has lost a number of recruits already. Waiting to announce would be foolish. That’s why you know it hasn’t happened.

Same reason they were trying to keep Butch Jones around until the end of the year. Out of respect to the current players and coaches. They want the team to focus on winning the last 2 games and getting to a bowl game. If Tennessee announced Gruden as the head coach right now, it would be pandemonium in Knoxville. No one would be talking about the last 2 games. The coaches would get questions about whether Gruden let them know if they'll be on the new staff. Players would get asked about him more than the upcoming opponent.

Plus there isn't much of an advantage to be gained right now in recruiting. Players can't sign until Dec. 20. If Gruden is hired on Nov. 26 he will still have over 3 weeks to get back the recruits we've lost. Remember Butch Jones had a consensus top 5-6 class committed before he was fired and players decommitted. Gruden might attract some new names but the main thing will be trying to keep everyone we originally had back in the class.

The new signing day is Dec. 20th. He'll most likely be announced Nov. 26th. The more than 3 weeks to recruit. That's enough time.

Nobody announces a new coach while the season is ongoing. It will lead to problems. Nobody will be talking about the last 2 games. Everyone will be talking about the new staff. You would have assistant coaches being asked whether the new coach is gonna retain them. You'll have players being asked more about the new coach than the next game. It would cause more problems than it would solutions.

Ohio State in 2011 had this same thing happen. Urban agreed to the contract on Nov. 17th. It was reported by one media outlet. Urban Meyer and Ohio State denied it. Then 2 weeks later when the season ended, he was formally announced as the new head coach. The same thing is happening right now. Gruden agreed to the contract Wednesday night. No one at Tennessee or Gruden himself will recognize it until the season is over in 10 days.

If this is accurate,(and I don't think that it is) Tennessee's athletic department is run by morons. No wonder the program is in shambles.

If Gruden is the guy you announce it in a timely manner to get the ball rolling and stop the negative recruiting while giving 4*-5* athletes the time to weigh their options. Waiting just gives guys content with their current commitments an opportunity to grow closer to their recruiters/staff. Focusing on the last two games just gives Brady Hoke a chance to prove himself.

NOBODY announces a new head coach in the middle of a season while the team is still playing. If you can find me proof of that happening then I'll take this back. But I haven't heard of it. Everyone waits until after the final game to introduce the new head coach.

Even in 2011 with Urban Meyer doing TV like Gruden for ESPN and Ohio State being coached by an interim, the Buckeyes didn't announce he was officially hired until after the final game. Eventhough reports leaked two weeks earlier that a contract had been signed. Both sides denied it until the season was over. Then he was officially announced.

Right now most of the Tennessee recruits who decommitted are in a holding pattern. The AD John Currie has been in contact with them to hang on and that a hire would be made soon before the early signing period so they can make an informed decision. I don't think its as bad as you make it out to wait 10 more days before announcing Gruden as the new head coach.

Most coaches who are hired already have jobs in the NFL or NCAA and have teams to coach and even then coordinators will be named before the season ends unless you're talking about the regular season exclusively.

Exactly. But we have the example in 2011 of Urban Meyer. He was out of coaching and working for ESPN. A report surfaced Nov. 17, 2011 that he had agreed to become the head coach at Ohio State. He denied it. So did the university. Then 11 days later on Nov. 28, 2011, after the season ended it was formally announced the Urban Meyer was the new head coach at Ohio State.

The schools don't want to take attention from the kids that are still playing. They don't want speculation as who the assistants will be. Cause even if Gruden is out of football, most of the assistants he's gonna hire are still coaching on teams that are playing. How would it look if assistant coaches on other teams are being asked before the season ends if they're gonna be joining Gruden's staff at Tennessee? Tee Martin (offensive coordinator at USC) is apparently already getting hit with these questions right now because his name has been rumored as a possible assistant in a Gruden staff at Tennessee and that's with nothing being formally announced.

If Tennessee named Gruden as the head coach today there would be absolute mayhem. Better to let the season end and make the official announcement like Ohio State did in 2011 with Urban Meyer.

I think so too. maybe not fail but he prolly won't achieve much. Gruden needs a vet qb who can read defenses and make quick decisions for his wco to work

he was never good at developing a young qb from scratch, and that's what happens in college. gruden is good if your team needs a final push in offense department, he isn't someone who can just build shyt up from ground up
You dont think he built the Raiders into contenders?
