Let me throw in my opinion on something, I'm not sure if it's been mentioned,

I've been saying for years that NYC needs to crack down on people jumping the turnstiles, this is how a lot of the problems (crime) start in the subway system, people that don't belong on trains being on trains. From homeless people, to drifters, panhandlers, to kids acting a fool on the subways, non-paying riders causing all types of chaos amongst those paying customers who do belong on the trains and are simply trying to get from point A to point B.

Now, is this going to prevent 100% of the subway crimes? No. Will it help in reducing it? As a rider for 30 years, I certainly believe so.

I have a feeling that this animal who burned this lady had no business being on the train.

I've seen it with my own two eyes several times, someone jumps the turnstiles and cops are less than 20 feet away and do nothing. I saw a woman one time walk up to an officer and pointed someone going through the doors without paying, and the officer just gave her the Stephen A. Smith smiley face.

I know two police officers, and I've asked them this question, why don't y'all do anything against these people on the train? Why don't y'all arrest homeless people on the trains or take them into a shelter or something? And both told me without hesitation, "yeah we ain't trying to bring someone in like that, do all that paperwork and have a bum at the station with all their garbage that they drag around with them, then they get released within 48 hours, other cops be looking down on you and calling you out for bringing in 'trash'..." their words verbatim.

It seems like no one in NYC ever wants to have this conversation, cracking down on this on at the turnstiles should be a priority but it's just not. The only time I ever remember seeing any news outlet talking about this was NY1 News way back in like 2004, and it was a quick 3-5 minute segment.
They just started somewhat taking it seriously this year, because the agency lost a bunch of money from people not paying the fares.

But I agree 100% that a large portion of the folks who cause issues in the subway are folks who didn’t pay to enter the system.

The City Council and the NY State Assembly has made it so the arrests are pointless revolving door exercises.

Why the fukk would any cop who wants to go home to their family bother with that shyt when the common refrain is that they're on the phones playing Candy Crush?

This latest incident proves it but the first thing out of these folks mouth is Trump.

It has nothing to do with Trump: LIBERALISM IS FAILING IN REAL TIME AND WE'RE WATCHING IT IN HD

Yes there are bad cops. They should have their badges taken and removed from service.

That is a whole separate conversation though from the fact that the electeds are perpetuating a system where criminals don't stay locked up, the homeless and mentally ill are not removed, and illegal immigrants repeatedly enter this country even after being removed.

The Democratic Party will not be able to slide this time and it's their own fault.

The fukk? I'm not Republican and have never voted for them and will never vote for them just of principle but enough is though, and at a certain point the people will let that be known.

Once again, if it wasn't for RCV, most of the politicians in NYC wouldn't have jobs right now. Literally they would not be employed because they have no other discernable skills.

Exo you’re entertaining the idea that a subway that literally handles millions of commutes daily is somehow Afghanistan? You and @ISO nees to stop the hyperbole. Everyone has an NYC subway story and the vast majority of people won’t face a thing on the daily. Now, there are some subway lines that are a little sketchier than others - especially at night and for women - which is like walking down the equivalent of the same sort of street.

But the idea that it’s Afghanistan is some shyt that’s just going to lead to even more policemen in the Subway not doing shyt and getting paid for it. Dudes be on their cell phones getting OT with no semblance of crime in sight besides someone trying to jump the subway.
So, New Yorkers most who feel this way are wrong? The stats that say this is the worst it’s been since 1997 are wrong?

It’s ok for a kid in the Bronx to basically walk through a shooting gallery before boarding the train every day to school?

It has to be Afghanistan for something to be done and for concerns to be credible?

Ok, bro enjoy paying that soon to be 4% price hike for dangerous, shyt service.

They used to ticket and it used to be enforced.

My ass know because I had to eat some tickets but that was when I was young. :lolbron:

Before the pandemic if you was hopping turnstiles or boarding select buses without paying there was always a chance of getting ticketed.

The buses are even worse now everyone gets on without paying.

Bus drivers used to be stern if you was a teen and lost your MetroCard a lot of em used to make an example out you and teach you to politely ask them for a ride. There was less protection for them too back then a steel pole/latch now they in like a lil booth and their sole responsibility is driving the bus.

Honestly shyt has changed a lot…

i dont know a damn thing about new york, but i know about police, and theyre not going to run these guys down and tackle them... theyre gonna start spraying bullets and putting people in danger. i dont know how they have it set up there, but i'd imagine as huge as NYC's transit system is, they must have some kind of security force they could put on this. there must be a way they can make it safer without making it worse, or the current position (which is arguably worse): apathy

havent turnstiles been around forever? they dont have a better system they can use? maybe if they werent so easy to jump in the first place it wouldnt be so prevalent.

but then again... any psycho who wants to kill a stranger can probably scrape up enough for a bus pass or token. maybe society is just totally fukked up and broken. i wish i knew the answers

Is it really the worst era for Subway crime since '97 or is it that more crimes are just being reported now than in every other year? :jbhmm:

I feel like the subway is shyt right now but on the other end this era is the safest I ever felt on the train. I have seen some shyt in my years and I can honestly say it has gotten better since the early 2000s :manny:.
Yeah, it’s the worst, it’s not like people didn’t report crime back then.

When I was growing up there wasn’t this many homeless. I didn’t grow up seeing syringes and orange tops everywhere. That was some bygone era shyt.

the subway is uh, definitely not fine lmao

ive been traversing this city solo for 15 years now. the first 5 years i was a student that primarily took the bus (which only has a leg up over the train because you aren't trapped in a tube underground), and the majority of the remaining decade, i was required to get up and report to a site or office of some sort and relied almost exclusively on MTA trains to do so. my current job requires me to be in lower manhattan 2 to 3 times a week. i share all that to say that i am a regular, seasoned straphanger and not just someone pontificating on the net.

the subway is cooked.

i regularly have to switch train cars to avoid fuccery included but not limited to...

  • people openly engaging in drug use
  • people (typically men) exposing themselves and flat out sexually assaulting other riders
  • people pissin and shyttin openly (note: none of these things are occurring on "empty trains")
  • people fuccin, smoking, blasting music, ignoring basic etiquette, feeling that their bag is entitled to a seat, etc.
  • bodily oders so rancid that people are gagging
  • folks obviously looking to crash and looking for passenger to collide with
i had a conversation with my mom about it a few weeks ago and she says that she's surprised how people are just accepting the deterioration of basic infrastructure that we all pay into. the fact that there are folks out there okay with the nyc subway seemingly returning to it 1980s form is wild to me :manny:

This.

Now you know why when someone from NYC is able to buy car, they will never, ever step foot in a train/bus for as long they have a car. They’d rather deal with traffic.
It's also funny when these dumbass mfers on social media and this very website say that nobody drives in NYC.

People are so wildly out of touch with the average citizen that it's mind boggling to me at this point.

Transit police will bother or patrol legal paying riders before the illegal ones. That’s how it is in DC and Philly from my experience. I once left a lunch party, where I had just finished eating, and now on my way to my next trip and some transit police is harassing me in the platform for my food that I’m carrying home ina to go tray talking about I can’t eat onthe platform. I’m yelling at him that I’m not eating, I’m just carrying my bag which is clearly tied up . Dude threatening Me talking about throw it in the trash or leave. I sit there and say no. Call your boss and don’t touch me. Other people on the platform are telling. I wasn’t eating , just standing there airing for the train. Meanwhile I’m watching kids jump over the pay stands and getting free rides.
