New York police reportedly are investigating whether there could be a connection between the fatal shooting of rap legend Jam Master Jay and the wounding months later of the rapper's nephew. Karl Jordan, 20, was arrested on Aug. 8 on charges of attempted murder in the shooting of Rodney Jones, who was hit in the leg by gunfire in the Hollis section of Queens on May 14, authorities said.

Jones, a rapper known as Little Dee, is the nephew of Run-D.M.C.'s Jam Master Jay, whose real name was Jason Mizell. Mizell was killed on Oct. 30 by a masked gunman in the lounge of his recording studio in Queens.

Jones identified Jordan as the gunman, local news outlets reported today (Aug. 20). Darren Jordan, Jordan's father, told the Daily News that investigators have questioned his son about Mizell's death.

"The police are telling my son he's in a lot of trouble, and people are saying he had something to do with the murder of Jam Master Jay," Darren Jordan said. "My son ain't scared, but he's not comfortable. He knows he didn't do it."

Investigators have explored several different theories involving the death of Mizell. There has been speculation he may have been involved in a dispute over money, or that he was caught in the crossfire of a rivalry between rap figures who associate with known criminals

have been charged with the murder of Jam Master Jay while engaged in cocaine trafficking, according to an indictment unsealed in the Eastern District of New York that also charged the two with drug offenses.

The murder of Jam Master Jay stemmed from a dispute over drug trafficking, according to the indictment.

According to investigators, Mizell sought to exclude Washington from a large multi-state drug deal. In retaliation, Washington and Jordan conspired to murder, and ultimately executed Mizell.

Prosecutors claim that the two had “executed” Mr. Mizell after he sought to exclude them from “a multi-kilogram, multistate narcotics transaction.” In July 2002, just months before the murder, court papers say, Mr. Mizell had received about 10 kilos of cocaine “on consignment” from a supplier in Maryland. Mr. Washington and Mr. Jordan were supposed to have been his partners in the deal, the papers say, but after a dispute, Mr. Mizell threatened to cut them out.


“There was a beef — it didn’t go as planned,” one official said.

Mr. Washington, 56, is currently serving a federal prison sentence for robbery. Mr. Jordan, 36, was taken into custody on Sunday.

A law enforcement official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said two witnesses were now cooperating in the case.
