A bird strike has emerged as a possible factor in Sunday’s crash, after officials revealed that air traffic controllers warned the aircraft about bird strike risks minutes before the accident and one of the surviving crew members reportedly mentioned a bird strike after being rescued. While the exact cause remains under investigation, the incident has drawn attention to Muan International Airport’s history with such incidents, reports Yonhap News.

The airport has recorded the highest rate of bird strikes among South Korea’s 14 regional airports, with 10 incidents reported between 2019 and August this year, according to data submitted to parliament by the Korea Airports Corporation.

Avoid this airport

But once again what is on these runways for these planes to crash into once they bellyflop on the mat

Bird strikes are extremely common. Most airports have programs to keep birds away from the grounds and airspace. Remember the Hudson landing? Geese did that. Aircraft engines are susceptible to debris near the ground messing them up, that’s why planes engines are usually high up off the ground.

However here, there has to be more to it. Engine failure and flaps failure leading to a landing like this coming in this fast without gear can’t really be fully explained by a bird strike. Maybe the pilot got hit in the face by the birds? We just don’t know
How would the bird get in the cockpit???

Landing gear failed. Don't really know how a bird can cause that tho. Should have a fail safe built in where the landing gear can be manually lowered. Only two survivors outta 181 is crazy. Wonder how bad they were injured??
I get that but as of now we don't have further information. Also this was a 15 year old plane. Is Boeing the responsible partner for maintenance/upkeep? Genuine question.
