The story in the game isn't even interesting surprised they made it a movie
eh. The story's plenty interesting. It just wasn't told in an interesting way... well. Ever. BL2 didn't even do it in an interesting way, there was just great character writing on the villain, which can carry anything tbh.
Corpo-wars on a planet for resources, just to find out the planet is housing a vault. Presumption is it is filled with riches or tech to win the wars between these anarchic mega-corps. Mad Max vibes throughout what's effectively a giant heist to try and break through these precursor race's defenses... just to find out it wasn't locking away something valuable, but locking away something eldritch. But, now the treasure hunters who fought to get to the vault, have to fight to keep what they just released from destroying the planet. And as soon as they do: surprise. There's a bunch more of these vaults scattered across the galaxy.
It's a great launching point for planet-bound science fiction.
They've just quite literally never been able to make the story and the setting interesting enough. Game was always carried by loot novelty and either great or so-bad-it's-good character writing. The movie's about to be horrible
