i have to get this off my chest

i guess this is a show review

like it or not, the writing turned what could have been a 5 star classic show into a 4 mic mc wit 5 mic potential

the acting was superb EVERY YEAR

but this show did not know what it wanted to do.

SECTION A: JIMMY


it spent 2 years cultivating a vibe around a young jimmy darmody, broken back from the war, ready to become one of nuckys foot soldiers in the bootlegging age

jimmy looks at nucky like a father and nuckytreats jimmy like a b*stard nobody who he passes up

jimmy drops the most important quote to nucky, the supposed BOSS of the show

"you cant be half a gangster"

the show itself is based on that quote and the entertainment that quote brought

jimmy is contemporary oif capone, showing him being partners for a time wit the gangsta...

and of course introduced us to the SUPER GOON team of jimmy/harrow


ok this might be long but....nh


end of season 1, jimmy is approached by the greedy commodore (his own fathers whos true disgusting nature isnt seen until this year... brilliantly played.. writing wise and actor wise) and his own loving brother eli (who as we go thru the show.. IDK why eli ever hated nucky like that after looking upto him his whole life. thats like @K-Deini killing me cause i got a bigger plate at the dinner table

ALL THE WHILE THE SHOW GOES OUT OF ITS WAY TO SHOW THAT JIMMY DID NOOOOOOT WANT TO DO IT

Nucky ends up doing business with everyone in the room who voted to have nucky killed..yet only jimmyu dies and eli somehow skates this time.

nucky does business with the man who brutally murders jimmys wife and puts jimmy pout to pasture... even tho jimmy coulda brought harrow and killed everyone there. he didnt wanna live anymore. and drops the second most important gem to nucky AGAIN that sets the tone

"when you run out of booze and run out of company, the only person left to judge you is yourself"

season 1-2 were awesome to me. the writing was great besides...

mention the weirdo sex incest shytr between jimmy n his mom that was uneeded. typical winter shyt


SECTION B (BE: SEASON 3 AKA POST JIMMY)

after two classic seasons that set up what could have been the greatest tv show of all time.. we get introduced to a new BE

jimmys gone. leaving harrow on the sidelines/ the dynamics of what made the show so great changes and unfortunately not for the better. season 3 starts with a bang. we are introduced to gyp rosetti who is unfairly hated on here for reasons unknown.

dude brought that loose cannon vibe back to BE when jimmy was killed. the other characters are predictable but gyp is a true loose cannon and made for tv/.

his quip to AR "kike creeping around like a fukking dentist with the ether" is all time classic

the same AR at nuckys party who earlier tried to have nucky killed is now chillin with nucky and telling him "this is why I enjoy our friendship, goo conversation". (more on AR later)

while gyp puts onb a fukking entertainment clinic, the writing starts to crack.

gillians story with the fake jimmy death was horrible.

margerette (yes i went all this way witout mention her. the one consistant weak point on the show) does some stupid doctor bullshyt after fukking nucky over and over after he really saved her life from being someone like his mother; a broken down and beaten old woman.

OWEN: jimmys replacement/ they tried to make owen look hard wit that strangle kill in the bathroom. dude wanted to get sweet in there and made a messy kill. jimmy woulda gutted that mofo 1-2-3. he was the "irish specialist" blwing up jimmys shyt in season 2.. but in season 3 hes far worse

OWEN AND MARGETTE: wouldnt be terence winter witout some weirdo taboo shyt in there (see jimmy/his mom, the reason narcisse even comes to AC/vito sucking dikk in the sopranos etc)

owen n margette start fukking and we learn marg was basically a whore. and she fukks owen behind nuckys back and own says he leavin with her (after having his own fine ass woman). so this unloyal mofo goes and impregantes the bosses wife after she lysolling her p*ssy to make sure she aint pregs wit nuckys kid.

ive never been so happy the day i seen own slumped like a pile of laudry in that fukking box. this bum thought he coulda took joe the boss out. YOU AINT JIMMY OR HARROW HOMIE. YOU AINT BUILT FOR THIS

so nucks down and out... his only ally is really our man chalky.. whos starting to come into his own

hes shown at home, insecure wit his own wife. planting seeds. hes shown as a loving father n husband who is in control of AC

chalky stands up for nucky against gyp. making him the only one wit class on nucks whole team. but nucky still outgunned so he forges alliances with chi town and calls the goons up to war wit masseria..except..

except my man harrow comes in with the call of duty nuke kill streak and starts no scoping a whore house full of gangsters to save JIMMYS kid

remember jimmy? the show doesnt by season 4 either. he gets a 2 min panic attack scene when nuck sees the altar boy with a hole in its cheek. jimmy is essentially never mentioned again in relation to nuck throughout the show and the show turns into something else going in season 4

SEASON 4 (CUCKOLD COUPLE STARTS WAR IN ATLANTIC CITY)

in classic winter fashion, more taboo weirdo shyt is shown for no reason other than to make chalkys b man look like a savage and white people some freaks.

Narcisse basically comes into the show over some freaky porn shyt. think about that for a second. if this was any other show i swear no pass would be given

this sets up chalky. the proud family man who loves his fam to death and does anything for them. gives them what he never had, an education, a chance, etc

well that was all good until son seen that yellow bone and shyt went out the window

heres what i started getting out of season 4 on some shyt cause the fukkery never ended
a) the most educated, positive speaking black man on the show was secretly a PIMP, a GOVT INFORMANT.. AGAINT BLACKS THEMSELVES and the original pusher of HEROIN to black neighborhoods that are still destroyed by their effects almost 100 years later. all the while calling others out for shucking and jiving for the white man
b)his opposite chalky, is a poor educated, true man of his people and community. he was a good man. but his prior insecurities with himself caused by narcisse getting into his head turns him into a DEADBEAT as he LEAVES HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN for some yellowbone who leaves him after a few days.
c)the original THOT daughter maintalnd... nothing to really say except she was a hoe
d)chalkys right hand man STABS HIM IN THE BACK. unloyal as fukk after chalky gave him everything.

why is every black character on this show essentially a ROTTEN piece of shyt

i mena it woulda been ok if that was the season 4 sideplot... but that WAS the strory of season 4

the god harrow on the bench athe all star game but playin pickup games wit some bums outta state

the writing ATTEMPTS to put seeds in ya head that he aint built for this anymore. I guess saving Tommy and killing 20 mobsters witha sniper rifle INSIDE a house just took it outta him this year. again 'brilliant' writing bywinter as the old advice jimmy gave nucky TWICE with "you cant be half a gangster" and "after the booz, the only person left to judge you is yourself"

and what happens? after finding something worth fighting for, after another year long layoff afterbusting shots at gillians.. son loses the rest of his smile and pulls a scott norwood at the big game



and KILLS CHALKYS DAUGHTER

of all the moves made. of all the ways to go out.

Richard harrow th last remaining gawd of the boardwalk is killed witha 22 to the gut at long range and goes to the beach to die with a new family waiting for him. chalky gets his daughter killed over some fukking p*ssy yall...

eli fukks up again and is given a 3rd chance exiled in chicago for killing the fed. i grew to like eli since he did his bid. he did his time. he provided for his family. he loves his family. and nucky involved his son and "wanted to take my (eli) family away" cause he didnt have one of his own

the only character making PROGRESS this entire time is CAPONE and VANALDEN. lucky/meyer seem held back by their bosses. Joe the boss and AR. bringing me to here...

SECTION C-A (A.R./UNTOLD STORIES/WHAT COULDA HAPPENED)

since season 1... my fav character besides jimmy was arnodl rothstein. I was not aware that rothstein basically ran a college program for gangsters. lucky,legs,meyer,etc. the list goes on. he was a major part of season1 as he was the BRAIN behind all these guys. i mean the show starts with the world series scandal which was HUUGE in the media.

His cunning/the way he handled himself was always top notch. not only was he put on as nucks equal in the "professional gsngter" world, this pale fukk was as cold as the milk he sipped on and so incredibly interesting beause he akways knew the odds and always had something up his sleeve.

how could you hate AR as he made money giving up the delessios and selling mickeys life insurance policy incase nucky needed him rubbed out if he was low on cash

AR has great character development throughout the show, with season 4 showing the first cracks in his armor which mirrored his real life...

and we all know AR was about the die.. we all knew it would be great tv, we knew the gangster shyt was about to fukking POPOFF. AR passing was the handoff for them boys to run and for the syndicate to really get going


but then we got season 5

SECTON D ( SEASON 5 aka SEASON aka BE leads the league in RUSHING). im too mad to even think about this past season.

Yes, the season was rushed....yes it could have been better...but as far as ending NUCKY'S story it did it's job.

The whole point was to show Nucky's greed and ambition was ultimately his undoing. Not because he bit off more than he could chew, but because he compromised himself constantly trying to be as Jimmy said, "half a gangster". If you look at Nucky you see a man who is the embodiment of Chaotic Neutral. Dude acted like he had some sort of moral code but really when it came down to it would do anything.

When he gave up Gillian to the Commodore you saw it in his face that this was his point of no return. And the moment that began his rise was also the moment that would end him. Nucky was a guy that knew how to plan for the future of his money but never really looked at the consequences of his actions with other people. He saw Margaret took her and didn't think of the fact that he had killed her husband, didn't even see Owen mackin on her, didnt think of how he pushed Eli, Jimmy, AR, and many others away because he felt he could buy everyone or give em jobs.

As far as this season...
Young Nucky KILLED IT, the sucst he had when them lil girls was singing to the Commodore, the saddness you saw in his heart when he went from fired, to promoted, to the Commodore's personal demon in a matter of minutes.
That death scene from the Doctor.... it was sad to see such a trill cat go...but DAMN...shyt was extra dramatical.
Van Alden....i mean man....dude has to be one of the most bizarre, hilarious and unlucky dudes in the history of TV. From evangelical, high-horse, self-serving prohi to spineless, scandiavian thot popping, cuckold


Still nothing was going to top the amazingness that was Season 2.
I mean Jimmy dying was serious....but honestly his wife dying was more shocking. Remember up until then the violence was very clean and only involved bootleggers or perhaps Prohi agents....she was one of the first victims in the series that was almost completely innocent outside of just having a kid with the wrong dude in College. This show needed Jimmy so much in the last seasons. ESPECIALLY SEASON 4 I agree that if he woulda died a season later in season 3 and kill Owen as well, then gave us season 4 with a broken Nucky from having to kill Jimmy AND his woman stepping out on him, coming back and taking AC back...THEN the time skip for season 5 it woulda been more impactful.

haven't read the thread yet but i'm expecting people to have said something similar to what I'm about to say...

at this cheap cop out ending.
when that little fakkit popped up i knew it was Tommy and thats how it would finish.

since people floated the idea that he's Tommy i've noticed they've had him in the colors of suit/shirt Jimmy would most often wear and that fact the actor did his part in the slow talking way that Jimmy often would..i hoped it wasn't him and he was just some sort of retard but the people that have been saying it since he popped up were right.

i honestly would have preferred some low-key shyt like after seeing Gillian, he's thinking about the past and he has a heart attack on the boardwalk or in the water.



it's a shame because i wasn't even mad at the finale up to that point.
yeah, i had problems with how they crammed what should have been two episodes into the finale..but that summed up the show for me..missed opportunities.

loved the scene of Al hamming it up on his way to trial and the scene right after being Boardwalks version of The Commission..

Margaret nearly made me hard in her office running rings around Kennedy
nice touch on the scene w/ Al and his kid years after the great one from the earlier seasons

flashback Nucky's face when about to square up with his pops haha
noticed Gillian in the looney bin was made to look like when flashback Gillian when Nucky's wife took her in, did her hair and put a dress on her etc.
and Narcisse getting got..

all in all a great show that should have been top tier but never quite reached the heights we thought it was going onto.

Which is why I say Jimmy getting killed at the end of season 2 is why the ending wasnt as satisfying as it could be.

We really didnt feel the loss of Jimmy the past few seasons (from Nucky's point of view). Now out of nowhere his kid kills him.

Imagine if the 2nd to last season featured Jimmy's death instead.

Also, the visuals in Jimmy's death scene are amazing. Makes me miss this show even more knowing we'll never see something like that again

This is a really important point about Nucky. He assumes that everyone around him has the same motivations as him. All he had to do was treat Eli like a brother and Jimmy like a son and they would never have turned on him. Instead he assumes that they are strictly motivated by money, like he is. In the final shot of Eli he desperately searching through that bag hoping that there is something else besides money in there. In Gillian's final scene Nucky tells her she has a private room and a trust fund if she gets out, but at that point Gillian probably would have preferred a lie. Something to let her keep her Blanche DuBois fantasies afloat. If Nucky had lied to her said "don't worry I am working with some powerful men to get you out of here", Gillian would have died happily waiting around for that day to come. Instead Nucky offers money, because that's the only way he can imagine a human being motivated.

how could you hate AR as he made money giving up the delessios and selling mickeys life insurance policy incase nucky needed him rubbed out if he was low on cash

AR has great character development throughout the show, with season 4 showing the first cracks in his armor which mirrored his real life...

and we all know AR was about the die.. we all knew it would be great tv, we knew the gangster shyt was about to fukking POPOFF. AR passing was the handoff for them boys to run and for the syndicate to really get going


but then we got season 5

This is a really important point about Nucky. He assumes that everyone around him has the same motivations as him. All he had to do was treat Eli like a brother and Jimmy like a son and they would never have turned on him. Instead he assumes that they are strictly motivated by money, like he is. In the final shot of Eli he desperately searching through that bag hoping that there is something else besides money in there. In Gillian's final scene Nucky tells her she has a private room and a trust fund if she gets out, but at that point Gillian probably would have preferred a lie. Something to let her keep her Blanche DuBois fantasies afloat. If Nucky had lied to her said "don't worry I am working with some powerful men to get you out of here", Gillian would have died happily waiting around for that day to come. Instead Nucky offers money, because that's the only way he can imagine a human being motivated.

Exactly, its part of the reason why so many people caught him off guard. He though he could by Margaret back, though he could buy Tommy off, though he could buy virtually anyone. If you notice every time he came up against someone who's motivation wasn't purely money he either almost dies or someone close to him gets hurt or killed. Almost no one in the show besides Harrow had any sort of moral compass.

It was great to see Luchiano in his boss role. I swear I'd be 100% on board for a Luchiano/Lansky show....man Even in just 8 episodes you saw him go from being looked at as a "good boy" to taking over. Massaria and the rest of them made a fatal error in not recognizing these cats as talented.

When they showed young Gillian

I was broken by that. She looked so trusting and believing and her life turned into a horror story.

Cant say Nucky didnt deserve that fate.

on rewatch im not even going to bother with the last 3

i barely remember 1,2 it has to be rewatched, those were the GOAT worthy seasons.

that ending could of been better if they were really going the cheesy route, why not when he realises hes Tommy change his face to Jimmy, to make it seem like he killed him as revenge from the grave. just seemed so thrown together like they wanted to wipe their hands of it all

cant wait to see Angela again in season 1

The most disturbing thing about their relationship is how even when Nucky goes to see her in the Psych Ward, he still acting hard like he didn't have anything to do with her being a complete mess.

He even implied that she "won" because she was in there and not in jail
