Just tuned in and heard Paul Frazee (@pfrazee.com) mention that now when you change your <handle>.bsky.social to a custom domain handle it will reserve your old .bsky.social handle for you!

This is one of those features that slipped through the cracks for way too long. Glad the team finally got to it!

Paul Frazee (@pfrazee.com) Is there a recommended procedure to follow for folks who have already changed to a custom domain and set up a (new) "forwarding" account to reserve their name?

I'm going to assume this was your reply to this post lmao — thanks Paul Frazee (@pfrazee.com)!

And hopefully, both the .domain handle and the .bsky.social handle resolve to the profile.

That way, people who know / use the old handle will not get lost and will be auto resolved to the current (domain) handle.

That sort of happens already, where @handle mentions and so on use the underlying DID, so anything created in-app before you switch handles redirects correctly. But web urls do key off handle by default (though you can manually use the DID instead) and get broken by the change.

i think this has been fixed too, or maybe something Ryan did for the bridge, since I mostly see the link on there, and it is always resolved to DID

I lost my first handle to that so happy to see this

*same pinch*

‪Timon‬ ‪@timonsku.zip‬

question is does it do it retroactively or do I have to switch back to a bsky handle to make use of the change?

‪Orual √‬ ‪@nonbinary.computer‬

One way to find out. Try and make Bluesky that's my original handle

Huge.

Is there documentation or other communication from the bsky team confirming this?

another failed social media venture
Is it failed?

At this point any Twitter alternative will have the same trajectory. A lot of people will sign up, but since any new platform will not have the level of engagement that Twitter took years to build up to, people will get bored and leave. If people expected any of these new sites to become mid-10's Twitter overnight, even with thousands of sign ups, had drastically high expectations lol.

People are too impatient on letting these platforms grow and that's how you know that convenience has people on a choke hold.

Bluesky is testing a trending topics feature

Ivan Mehta

10:21 PM PST · December 25, 2024

Social network Bluesky said on Christmas that it is testing a trending topics view. The trending topics are visible both on the desktop and mobile apps of the social network for users across the world.

On the desktop, you can see trending topics on the right sidebar, and on the mobile app, you can tap on the search button to look at them.

Bluesky said trending topics are currently available only in English. Users can disable trending topics by going to Settings > Content and Media and then unchecking the “Enable trending topics” option.

Bluesky is making sure content you don’t want to see will not be visible in the trending topics — muted words are carried over, so any words or phrases on your muted list won’t appear in trending topics.

The social network, which now has more than 25 million users, said this is just the first version of the feature and intends to improve on it.

While Bluesky has just introduced the trending topics feature, third-party Bluesky clients like Graysky already implemented it last year.

Bluesky’s rival Threads started rolling out trending topics to all U.S. users in March and began testing the feature in Japan in October.
