It's weird that Miles has his mother's name though. His father's name is Jefferson Davis, he should be named Miles Davis or Miles Morales Davis.


Interestingly, his father is a cop and named after the president of the Confederacy

In a 2019 story, Jefferson tells Miles he has his mother's surname because Jefferson's physically abusive father was "not a good person" and not having his grandfather's name gave Miles a "clean start."

Miles carries his mother’s last name - her name is Rio Morales.

As for not picking his father’s last name, a possible explanation is given in the Miles Morales novel by Jason Reynolds:

Miles shrugged. “Back in the day, my pops and my uncle did enough dirt in their lives to make Davis a bad word in some circles. I look just like them both and live in the same neighborhood, so, I don’t know, I wonder…”

If Miles’ guess is correct, it would mean that his parents gave him the last name Morales to stay away from the criminal past of the Davis name.

I’d thought maybe Davis was his middle name (or that he had two last names), but in the new issue Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1, his full name was revealed to be Miles Gonzalo Morales.
