Outside of when he is playing Thor nobody is checking for Chris Hemsworth:
TBF, thor was wack until ragnarok (and this year's avengers). it takes a little time for someone's new image to help them in other films - took a min for ironman to reinvigorate RDJ outside of ironman, channing tatum had a lot of fits and starts until people decided he was charismatic. hemsworth is funny and i think he can carry a movie, it's too early to write him off outside of MCU, but MIB was going to be a challenge regardless, that franchise to this day is Will and TLJ

cabin is the woods was teen horror, wasn't going to do well
ghostbusters was hated on GP, and it wasn't good
the snow white movies were panned wholly - except for charlize's performance

the rest of the movies on that list arent supposed to be big/were small movies

Nah, Thor got his shine back with Infinity War. That dropdown in Wakanda was crazy opening night.

I don’t want to write the guy off because these movies that flopped were gonna flop regardless of his performance. They were movies that shouldn’t have been made, especially in the case of ghostbusters. As for men in black, I really want to know who thought of and who green lit making an MiB movie without Will and Tommy, 7 years after the last and 22 years after the first. That was never gonna work out.

Ragnarok is where they got him back on track, but by the time he stepped out of the bifrost on the field in Wakanda with the axe in hand :wow:

i feel like this has been a topic for a long time. big budget films have flopped before and will continue to flop:manny:

and i'm not mad at reboots because sometimes they work. jumanji got a lot of hate when it was announced if i remember correctly but i ended up enjoying it.

I think it's the end of the "marketing" and "consultant" era.

It used to be that movies were made for targeted audiences. If you went to a Michael Bay movie you went to see people walk away in slow motion from explosions. They were popular with young men and they would drag their dates along.

Chick flicks were made for women. They would enjoy them and drag their dates along.

You had indie movies that would strike a chord with whatever group and overperform.

But nowadays, with so much money flowing from previous hits, budgets start expanding. Studios start hiring marketers and consultants who then start suggesting changes to the movies to attract the mythical "universal audience". So you end up with movies that start pandering to people who have no intention on seeing the movie and only piss off the targeted audience.

As the flops continue to stack up, budgets will decrease and those leeches will be the first to go. Then maybe studios will start making appealing movies again instead of the trash we've been getting.

I just got tix for a July 3 showing of Spider-Man at 730. $10. But if I went to a different theater with a bit more amenities, that price would increase by $2. Then if I went to an imax it probably shoots to $15. If I went to the Dolby surround sound auditorium, it’s now $18
$5.64 at amc before noon $5 tuesdays. $5 at alamo drafthouse matinee. $7 for another local chain pretty much any time too :ahh:

Indie theater is now $14 all the time though :francis:

This has been one of my beefs. I miss the era of targeted movies, especially as a black person. During the late 80’s-00’s you were hard pressed to not find a black movie to go to, some became universal classics, color purple, bad boys, some were black classics, boomerang, love and basketball, soul food etc, and some were garbage but fun to watch during that era, booty call or how to be a player

Amazing that in such a hypersegmented world that Hollywood has taken the view of everything has to be randomly diverse and made for the biggest audience possible.
