It also doesn't help that Kubo is a douche in general, most artists are self absorbed ego maniacs (I'm paraphrasing Alan Moore). You can't tell a person who doing all of the artwork that you want "something different" without some problems arising. Toriyama was going to make the most boring arc in anime history with Dr. Gero, only to have his editor come up with the GOAT villain of all anime.
Justly so, an artist in anything, is always followed by an idea guy, because at all times, we are dealing with the ramblings of man children who just want their way all the time, yet have no idea how to write a compelling story. Look at Naruto, that went Batshyt crazy after season 1....then they just should've called it Naruto; Samurai Adventures, because it stopped being about ninjas soon after. Ultimately, Kubo was acting like a petulant child when he released that statement, SJ put you on, Bleach was the Derek Jeter or Shounen Jump, and this idiot can't even praise them for making him famous.
Toriyama came up with Cell himself, all his editor did was tell him that Dr. Gero was lame. It basically went like this -

Ichigo confronted Yhwach- Got his sword broken and his ass beat by Yhwach- Yhwach left to go back to the SS through a portal- Tsukishma and Gin stre Ichigo's Zanpakto- Ichigo and Renji chase after Yhwach- Aizen and Yhwach confront each other- Ichigo and Aizen team up to beat Yhwach- Uryu uses a Silver dues es machine arrow his dad gave him to hit him with to rid Yhwach of his powers
...and Ichigo kills him with one slice
oh and 10 years go by and Ichigo's son destroys what is left of Yhwach with one hit.
