I watched the first 10 minutes and I couldn’t get past his voice, annoying af. I’ll try to give it another shot but I wish he hired an actual actor to play him

Rashida convinced him to play himself. He said he was getting an actor and Rashida was like get another person to play you. yo already have anthony anderson playing you. just play yourself

Playing a version of himself proved to be more challenging than he anticipated.

Says Barris: “It’s the biggest risk I could have ever taken, creatively. My joke, which is not a joke, is that I had watery stools for four days. I’m up in the middle of the night thinking, ‘What have I done?’ “This is the hardest and scariest thing I’ve ever done. I have so much respect for actors. They are magic people, the way they can make you feel things.”

Another actor “who we loved” was originally slated to play the role. But Barris felt the series would create more buzz if he played himself.

“I’ve figured out that the way to be the noisiest is to be personal, and this is as personal as it gets,” he says.

Jones also encouraged him to take on the role: “She said, ‘Isn’t there another actor already playing you on TV?’” referring to Anthony Anderson of “black-ish.”

Asked whether he approached Anderson or any of the other stars he has worked with for acting tips, Barris laughs again: “I would have been so embarrassed. It’s so derogatory and offensive that I’m even trying to do this. What am I going to say? ‘Hey, this thing that you’re great at — how do I do it?’”

He said his main approach was “to learn my lines so I could forget my lines. To make sure I had the point of the scene.”

Yea he’s annoying AF

But I feel like that he’s doing it on purpose. He’s kinda playing a dame dash like character it’s easy to hate but pretty entertaining and you realize he’s making sense even though he might come off as rude or weird

I love the lowkey miserable father angle that dude plays. Had me legit laughing at some of the shyt he was saying. Like the "dude's leave they family all the time and live great lives" the whiny voice put me off at first but its legit funny now

I am a fan of this show & can't wait for the next season

Maximum cringe in the finale tho. From the beach to the book thing couldnt handle it. Almost paused

this show is a banger and a testament to how needed netflix is.
yes netflix has a lot of problems with black content but i just don't see a network making this type of show.

while the show is not 90's sitcom level it is still a very good show that is much better than the current black content on network tv minus power and the early seasons of empire.

I love this show so far. only on episode 5 but it's already covering some great topics. Black fatherhood, black media and how to criticize effectively, even adultification.


i can see why the hate is there though but i thnk that's the point of the show. this guy is so rich he's out of touch with normal black people so he comes off as try hard with everything he does.

the miserable father is not an angle.. its true... i get it.. im there now .. but he was truely there thats why he filed for divorce last year.


but i live his life just not at that money level .

i get the gaze at my kids catholic school.. i get teh gaze when they find out ALL my kids in private school.. i get the gaze when i mention we got 3 cars... i get the OH when i tell them what i do.. im smart for a black person ... wtf cant i just be smart

I thought this show was great, binged the whole season in a day and change.

That frustration the dad shows in every episode, that shyt comes off way too authentic to be scripted lol
