Great thread! Ive been going through so much lately and i find myself putting everything into work or whatever business im trying to pop off. When i was first going through my depression i would call so many people just to vent and i slowly realized that they either dont care or care very little.

Instead I focused on long walks at the park, being in nature, meditation, and general acceptance. i have also been practicing non attachment to people and things. Its not easy standing alone and sometimes i want to break down and cry but the tears never come...

For most black people, going to your family for support is useless. You'll get some brainless response like "pray about it" or "da lawd gon make a way" :hhh:

I think black people have been somewhat conditioned to view themselves as less sophisticated and therefore not susceptible to "white people problems" like depression and anxiety. Those are really just human problems but black people have been denied acknowledgement as humans for most of recent history, so I guess acting like we can't be anxious or depressed is par for the course.

I don't feel like crying to anyone about anything, i'm too focused on my goals. Yeah there are racial dynamics that may make certain things harder, for sure, but crying about it won't solve it.

The world can be a shytty place, I just try to find enjoyment wherever I can. A big thing that will help you, is not giving a fukk what others think about you. However that's not possible for many people.

This right here. A lot of folks would be much better off mentally and emotionally if they did not care so much about what others thought of them. That will remove so many mental burdens if folks did this. But its just so engrained and conditioned for people to worry about other's opinions and their need to be liked and loved by others. Therapists probably tell their clients to not worry so much about other's opinions...especially if they not important people in ur life or if they not paying ur bills and providing u food and shelter. Why u think u have flaming sissies like Magic Johnson's son who don't care about what others say or his flamboyance embarrassing his family....cuz that sissy don't give a fuk.

First of all, a lot of people (our people in particular but all races do this) don't take proper care of their PHYSICAL HEALTH. So how can u expect them to take proper care of mental health issues and depression. Then, in our race, masculinity is very important and our men are expected to be alpha males....tough, aggressive, strong, resilient, etc. How the hell a dude gonna admit he hurtin....that doesn't fly in our community if u want to be known as a strong real man.

I wish there were more support groups for us black men. Its important to have a strong support system (good gf/wife, friends, family, etc.) to talk to when things get tough. With black folks, we have to deal with the shyt from cacs, other races as well as our own people. Its sad we have to deal with BS from our own...but it is what it is. Inferiority complex stemmed from slavery/history, living in a country with European standards of beauty, lack of wealth in our community, poverty, unemployment, and many other issues....its easy to understand why we have so many burdens, issues, and obstacles in our way.

I do think if u need to see a therapist, support group, etc...then it shouldn't be looked down upon. The issue is that we look down on those with depression and other mental health issues. That stigma needs to be dealt with.

I agree. I take a page from Tupac. He was a,man cause he could show his emotions. I think men must an even keel. Don't bottle your emotions but don't let them rule you. Cry if you if you must. Rage if you must then get back to your day. Go forward young man. Be true to self above all else, become the sandstorm on olympus, sweep the world in your wake.

I also deal with depression and anxiety. Sometimes it helps to talk. My therapist is a black woman.

Biggest complaints I've had are the isolation as a black professional (you never know how legit white folks are) and in teh past family treating you like a c00n for getting a college education. That changed a while back when they started seeing my checks and my shine :jawalrus:

And, in professional environments you probably have at least one racist interaction a day.
