What kinda welding does he do, is he an Ironworker?

Met a dude at my job who has been doing ironworks and is unioned working on NYC bridges and all that. Risky work hanging from all types of heights but he make good money. I want to learn welding prob take some basic intro classes just to see how it is

His family has had a business his whole life and he went into it. Probably why he never gave a fukk in school but then again he's definitely not book smart anyway:pachaha:

So I'm guessing he was on the low totem pole as a shop help/laborer and worked his way up to a Welder?

Not entirely sure but his dad probably had him training and helping out since he was a kid

He now owns the business with his brother

So for the 3G plate test with a backing plate, on the 7018 rod, is it better to use a 3/32 rod or a 1/8 rod?
I couldn't really answer off hand I haven't done a lot of stick welding. How thick is the plate? 1inch? I'd guess the 3/32. Wouldn't hurt to give both a try on a practice piece and see what you like better.
