How can you have this opinion, but have Kaepernick doing a symbolic gesture in your avatar?

Colin is not connected to slavery and "slaves."

His gesture is for all Black people and "POC" -- who are living in America under White Supremacy terrorism and rule.

Slavery and any talk, education, gratitude shown to the enslaved causes conscious or unconscious shame and/or embarrassment in lot of folks.

Especially, those who don't know who their family tree -- and the names of their enslaved ancestors.

Not understanding or caring that those "slaves" equal their 2nd, 3rd, 4th Great Grandparents and family members.

This isn't the appropriate way to show gratitude.
This is a clear cry for attention and approval
Excelling in their field and taking care of people is showing gratitude. You don't need fanfare and orchestrated social media pictures to do that

Like Love, everyone has different ways to show gratitude. I am hoping those involved with this picture release did not do it for personal and "press" placements. But, even if a few did -- it will be seen by someone who I am sure it will benefit, motivate and possible call them to research their enslaved ancestors.

Gratitude: the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

Thats bullshyt. You can be the most racist white person in America and know that black americans been making moves.

Stay woke:whoo:

Yeah, OK.

But, this isn't only about White folks. It's Black people in other countries all over the world - who have a negative and stereotypical view of Native Black Americans/ADOS due to past and present media representation in all formats.

Basically, not every knows we been making moves.

Above the fray.
depends on their intention behind it, but i for one, have at least a few moments each year where i look at where i am and think of where my roots are from and both feel for their plight but am thankful for their fight. personally, everything aint for social media, people try too hard to create look at me moments, so i while they did that, i hope there were real moments of thought and reflection on that trip, not just a trip to the site for a flick.
I think it's beautiful. Yes, It's symbolism - but if any of those students are truly ADOS - I am sure it was a amazing feeling. Plus, it can lead to motivation and pride for many.

We know - just the mention of Slavery or ancestors being enslaved brings shame to some - and/or others think we are supposed to be ashamed.

I would like to see more Black Doctors - particularly Native Black American doctors speak on the history of the Medical industry in the U.S.

Basically, educate and speak more about what Harriet Washington's Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present covers.

Work with historians and medical experts to make sure those whose lives were lost and bodies stolen that helped create the practices and treatments we use today - either their descendants are paid or given credit.

Grave robbing provided an excess of black corpses to medical schools. Birth control measures were disproportionately tested on black women; some called it intended genocide. Norplant was selectively marketed to poor black women and young girls.

And creating programs, internships and organizations that mentor and groom ADOS young children and teens to enter the medical industry.
Thanks for the replies. I usually don't tag people in threads, and was going to post this in the Root.

There's an elementary school near the town I grew up in that two of my younger relatives attended. School consistently tested among the top schools in the state, though it was not in an affluent or middle class zip code. Other schools in the same school district had terrible numbers.

The reason this school was different was DIRECTLY because of the principal. Super dedicated, born leader type African American principal. Everybody followed his lead.
I'm sure he's a school superintendent or heads a state education commission by now (at least).
The few times we went to the school for recitals or graduations..I remember he had the Ruby Bridges painting featured prominently in the school.

Startled me the first time I saw it up in an elementary school. But I got it, and it was consistent with the leadership he displayed and the results it produced. I am certain that he explained what the story of the poster was every year to the children. I'm also certain that for the majority of the children in that school that it was their first time hearing about it.

I bring up that man because I saw that the people behind this photo want to eventually do something along the lines of what he did. They want the pictures taken at the old Whitney plantation framed and put in schools across the country.

*oh, and the local school board eventually ran the principal out because of politics
