Some of the skeptical comments written here are especially puzzling because I included a print article along with the video in OP.
That article mentions that

Even a person not familiar with that organization could have figured out what its function was . If they were genuinely skeptical about the story, they could have googled the name. This is what they would have found after the 2 second search.

pipeline programs
The need for more physicians of color to serve in underrepresented communities has become more apparent as health disparities have increased between ethnic groups. Studies indicate that physicians of color are more likely to serve in communities with these disparities. To place healthcare providers in the critical need areas, the U.S. government has funded several programs to address these shortages. Although one-fourth of the nation's population is of comprised of people of color, less than ten percent of its physicians reflect that diversity. There is an unmet need that stems from three general weaknesses.

  1. Active recruitment and targeted exposure of underrepresented minority students to this field of study.
  2. Adequate preparation URM students for the rigorous pursuit of careers in medicine.
  3. A lack of a multifaceted support structure for students already embroiled in these undertakings.

SNMA is committed to help increase the pipeline of students of color that consider and prepare for medical and scientific careers. Our direct and classroom style mentoring programs in science appreciation and education, mentoring, and academic enrichment to elementary, junior high school, high school and college students interested in pursuing health-related careers. Working primarily through local chapters, SNMA is proud to organize and sponsor local pipeline programs that directly serve students of color through education and guidance.

Bless your heart, Brother, but you actually expected nikkas to come in here and READ?

c00ns don't really read. They just jump to conclusions with automatic cynicism.

Young successful black folks doing something productive and positive...and yet, people still hate.

I'm disappointed - but not surprised that misery does Indeed loves company.

Probably the same shyt seeing a black business owner take a picture in front of old black wallstreet in Tulsa

Probably the same shyt seeing a black restaurant owner buy a formerly "whites only" restaurant owner and transform

Its a way of saying, "this no longer has power over us"

You talking about people who were killed for learning to read and write... now their descendants are graduating at the top of academia.

SNMA is a complete joke, and I say this as a previous president of my school’s chapter. I went to AMEC once and seen all of the grandstanding and egos and realized that it wasn’t for me. To be honest, it be the people who seeking attention like this who aren’t the ones actually putting in work to bring about change.

What would the behavior of members of a national organization at an annual confrence have to do with with the fact that the outreach programs for youngsters interested in medicine exist?

Egos and granstanding ar par for the course of politics with any organization.

Now, as the former president of your chapter, What type of outreach or mentoring programs did you create or continue for high school or undergrads?

I put together conferences, health fairs, some science programs for an elementary school with absolutely no help from the national nor region snma organizations. But they still made a certain amount of our members pay fees to them for us to remain a part of the organization. I guess I’m cynical because the same people who post stuff like that didn’t pull their weight when it was time for action. Trust me when I say nikkas in medicine love to brand themselves lol.

just a random thought but I’m curious what would’ve been hustlemania’s stance on this if his past hadn’t been exposed...I wasn’t too familiar w/ his posting history :mjlol: he would’ve probably been one of the ppl who said we need to “move past” this type of symbolism...can’t take some of these comments seriously @ all lol

Glad to hear that you put together programs that helped to encourage the next generation of physicians and scientists.

You moved/move in the same spaces as the people being discussed of the thread, so you might see it differently.
As a complete outsider to the world, I see it as ..out of the 15 future doctors in the photo, these two are the most outgoing. I am certain that CNN reached out to all of them, and wanted to do a group interview. These two are the ones who agreed and are now doing the media rounds. BTW, the local media only picked up the story after the national outlets covered it.

As far as branding (and self promotion), I see that as being secondary in this case. But if these two photogenic educated Black people can benefit while helping to promote education to Black children, I'm all for it.
