Since I am here now visiting my family (leaving for NYC tomorrow...woo hoo!), born and raised from Pittsburgh, and there's never really any discussion about what Pittsburgh is like, I figured I'd share this link with people here. It's a very telling (and admittedly depressing) article about what it's like to be black in Pittsburgh.

http://www.pittsburghquarterly.com/...ns-in-pittsburgh-the-newcomer-experience.html

Nigerian immigrant Rufus Idris recalls a swarm of Swissvale police cars surrounding his vehicle after an officer pulled him over for allegedly running a stop sign. He was on his way home after giving a lecture at Carnegie Mellon University when police stopped him. One white officer laughed as he saw Idris dressed in his African attire.

"The way I was dressed was funny to them," he said. "An officer handed me a ticket. I asked, 'What is this for?' He said, 'You ran a stop sign?' I questioned him about which stop sign, and he said it was a few stop signs back down the road. I asked, 'Why didn't you stop me then?' He didn't have an answer."

Interesting.
Obviously racism exists everywhere but a bit surprising how blatant it was with the nigerian getting pulled over. From what I saw on Wikipedia, Pittsburgh is 25-26% black.
Seems higher than most cities.

I'm not black, but I was in Pittsburgh for a Pirates/Phillies game once. Cacs came up to me all game and asked me if I was related to So Taguchi. :snoop:

Western PA is 12% non-white though. And the Pittsburgh metro area has been given the title of the most non-diverse metro area in America.

The black population in Pittsburgh is concentrated in the city area, but spread out and secluded away from the city...if that makes sense.
Those West Virginia cacs are the worst :beli:

West Virginia is terrible altogether. IMO (from visiting there), it's a completely worthless state that has nothing to offer.

he's japanese and he used to play for the Phillies.
Dah, that makes sense.
I thought that name sounded familiar. Saw his BR page now.

I mean it doesn't make sense that you got asked if you were related to him.

I guess that makes sense.
My brother went out to a trade school out in Western PA and he was one of a handful of minorities anywhere in town.

If it makes you feel any better, when I went to school at Pitt :gag: I was constantly asked if I was on any sports teams.

As if the concept of a tall athletic black male NOT playing sports is alien to them.

He's a baseball player. You're Dominican...you should know these things :snoop:
Taguchi played for the Cardinals, the team I hate most besides the Red Sox.
Of course I wouldn't know much about Taguchi. LOL

And by the way, I think Yadier Molina is on the juice. this dude has more HR the last 3 years than the previous 7 combined.
And suddenly he's a .300 hitter?

:rudy:

Hmmph, aside from that, has the Pirate's recent success impacted gentrification in Pittsburgh?

Pirates just posted their first winning season in 21 years in 2013. I doubt the impact would happen that fast.
