You don't have to know all that stuff unless you want to make game engines like you said. People make successful commercial games using tools like Game Maker.

no doubt my man, it's just i'd personally find it more fulfilling to work behind the scenes. the math behind some the simulations you see in games (i.e. water flowing, a plate breaking, smoke) is really quite interesting.
