I consider African Americans to be descendants of people who were enslaved in America. People whose African ancestry was stripped from their knowledge. In that case, African American will have to suffice.
But if you're from Nigeria, that should make you a Nigerian American, not an African American just like people from Italy are Italian Americans, not European Americans.
