Biggie could never have become as big as Jay is.

The 3rd Degree
The two biggest acts in HipHop getting killed at around the same time opened up a huge vacuum that somebody had to fill. And Jay stepped in along with DMX, Ja Rule, and Eminem.

Jay would have still been successful, but I don't think he would have caught on the way he did with those two still in the picture.

I was just listening to "Who Shot Ya" and I was thinking this is a track that only biggie could make. This shyt is just grimey, and as much as biggie was able to make them straight crossover tracks, he was still extrememly street and extremely dark. And I started thinking about how Jay took up biggies spot after he passed. Realisitcally, biggie wouldn't have been able to make the transition to the boardroom the way Jay has. Jay was always kinda street, but his music was never dark, it was always flossy to a degree. I dont think biggie would ever have been quite as accepted in the mainstream outside of hip-hop. Dont even know if I really even have a point, just thinking out loud

edit - meant to post this in The Booth

End of the day- the thread starter is right. I don't think Big would have been bigger than Jay OUTSIDE of mainstream hip hop. A lot of things factor into this that I don't feel like typing on my phone.

Now Tupac, that was a different beast. He would've def been bigger than Jay

And to that other dude who commented on TI not speaking English. You can have media training and teach people proper grammar. You can't teach being a star.

From '94-'97

dropped Ready To Die, discovers and releases J.U.N.I.O.R. Mafia, releases Lil' Kim's debut, drops Life After Death and contributes heavily to Puff's No Way Out.

^^^ All of this was in a span of about three years. He also had plans of starting a clothing company in Brooklyn Mint. He was going to retire by 2000 with a triple disc album. Wasn't he one of the heads of Undeas with Un which released the JM project and Kim's first album. There was also plans for The Commission. One could argue that Jay basically used Big's blueprint to get where he is. It's likely that Biggie would've been bigger than Jay.

I would love to see what you'd say what are these factors you speak of?

Biggie would got even bigger, I know he died, but life SFTER death would've beat jays best selling album anyway.

It's a pointless argument really though.

Jays music has been
Garbage for a whole now (just thought is throw that in there)

BIG made songs with Michael Jackson.

He had 7 top 10 hits in the country in a two year span. Jigga didn't crack the top 10 with a solo single until 2001.
