@Black Steph Curry im not from cali but researching the history of San Fran, the city seemed to always have a very low black population in general. I think the peak percentage was like 12%.
But they did have the Fillmore area which was their Harlem.
Correct me if I’m wrong Cali folks. Thanks!
Yeah that was in 1970 Census, SF had a peak black population of 13.4%, which was about 95,900 blacks. SF today is 5% black (based on 2017 estimates) with a population of 44,460 blacks, that's a 53.6% decline in population in a 47-year stretch...
SF does have a lot of strong black history, but it has been minimized and diminished through purposeful discrimination in SF...
•Oakland was 47% black in 1980, but had its largest black population in 1990 at 163,526 blacks (43.9%). Today Oakland is down to 22.9% black, with a population of 97,457...
This is an open secret that isn't as spoken of, but Oakland's black population is declining even faster than SF, that's a 40.4% drop in just 27 years, from its peak in '90...
•Sacramento peak was 15.5% black in 2000, but our largest black population was in 2010 at 68,335 (14.6%). Today we are down to 13.4% black with 67,305 blacks. That's a 1.5% drop from our peak population in '10. This is a topic for another thread, but Sac is probably Northern Cali's best hope at maintaining strong black culture...
•Fresno peaked its black population in 1970 at 9.6%, but its peak population was in 2010 at 40,960 (8.3%). In '17, Fresno had 39,225 blacks (7.4%), a decline of 4.2% from its 2010 peak...
•San Jose peaked in 1990 at 4.7% black, population 36,766. Today SJ is 2.7% black with a population of 28,126, which is a decline of 23.5% from its 1990 peak...
SJ is the only major Cali city I think never really had a black neighborhood, could be wrong though. There just never was alot of us there, but both Oakland and SJ peaked in the same year. Blacks have been getting fleeced from Oakland at a significantly higher rate in the same time span, but I also think that's a product of visibility. People can pretend black people dont really exist in SJ, you really can't do that in Oakland at all...
•Riverside peaked at 7.4% black in both 1990 and 2000, bit its peak population was actually in 2010 at 21,421 (7%). Today Riverside is 6.2% with a population of 20,192, which is a 5.7% decline from 2010, a faster decline than both Sac and Fresno which peaked in the same year...
•Los Angeles peaked in blackness at the same time as SF, at 17.9% in 1970 (503,312). Today LA is 8.7% black with a population of 349,345, a decline of 30.6% since 1970. LA always had a larger and more diverse black culture than SF, and even though it peaked a whole decade before Oakland, Oakland has lost more of its black population...
•San Diego peaked at 9.4% black in 1990 with a population of 104,392. Today SD is only 5.8% black with a population of 82,710. That's a decline of 20.8% since the '90 peak...
SD never had a real large black community, and even though Oakland is still losing more of its blacks, SD is going the way of SF...
All of these large cities in CA are surrounded by smaller cities and burbs that also have large black communities; like LA has Inglewood, Compton, etc, Sacramento has North Highlands, Rancho Cordova, etc; Oakland has Vallejo, Richmond, etc; so on and so forth. Even San Jose has EPA...
