There’s several lyrical black rappers you can name before eminem even comes into the conversation

that vanilla effect.

For all of the wrong reasons...

Naw man, I clearly remember EVERYBODY digging that song when it came out. When he started doing too much and got exposed is what made people stop fukking with him.

Why isn't em top 5?

What hasn't he done that wouldn't put him in that category outside of your personal opinion and taste?

The sample was cool, but no real heads were fukking with that. I knew the words since I indirectly heard it so much, but I knew he was weak. Hammer, too, but at least he had some kind of swag, for lack of a better term.

No one will say it, but he hasn't made a "wigger" enough album. If he talked about "black" shyt, and rapped over R and B/soul loops instead of rock, he might get those props, but he gets punished for doing what he relates to. "Keeping it real":francis:

Not saying he is Top 5 BTW, just my $0.02

Did you buy those albums because Eminem was a white rapper who could spit or because you actually liked the music?
It doesn't matter why I BOUGHT THEM, what matters is that i personally knew many white boys whom didn't really listen to hip hop, were more on Marilyn Manson etc, BUT DID fukk with and support eminem. Em is talented but no way he sales 5 mill without CACness. Now that wasn't the only factor, Dre legitimized him and he's actually dope. It's a great position he's had. For a few years he actually meant alot to non white hip hop fans, but due to his white hero position, even after he meant nothing to non black hip hop fans, he's still a huge draw. For instance, I personally love RECOVERY and think it can match his first 2 Aftermath releases. It was very successful. But it meant nothing to black people as a whole. He can be big without black fans. I'm not saying he wouldn't be successful as a black man. But he'd definitely lose alot more than 50% of his sales. He wouldn't have even got away with some of the things he did, without white power.

Eminem had it made

Never was held to the standard of black rappers
Never had to dominate black rappers
Never had to dominate urban functions

Yet we are supposed to rank him against those that did

It DOES matter why you bought them. You made it a point to bring up how many Em albums you bought, but won't answer why you bought them.

The point is Eminem is has remained the ONLY white rapper to have continued success in Hip Hop. Nobody is saying that him being white isn't a factor. The point is, as you've pointed out, isn't the only factor. Eminem appealing to those Manson fans had a lot to do with him making a Manson- esque video (he actually dressed up like Manson in "My Name Is") and the fact that he made similar music content wise. There a lot of people who aren't white who cherry pick which rapper or rappers they listen to.

And an album like Recovery is by design. He made an album blatantly pandering to the Pop, mainstream audience by making these power crossover Pop rap records that were the ant

I brought up what i did, to show I'm a true fan. Why me, a black person bought his albums, doesn't have any bearing on why the multitude of white people bought his albums. The scenario, I went on to outline is very indicative of his position in white society and the stature it gave him.

Being white obviously helps him but something else helps him have the continued success that has eluded most white rappers. The only white hip hop acts with real long term careers are Eminem and The Beastie Boys. Maybe EL-P but your average person on the street doesn't know him.

the better question is what has he really done to be considered top 5.

or maybe he just didn't make great music.
