keeping mind you don't get any point value with platinum. The gold really is a better card. only way you getting more than 1x points on platinum is if your're booking flights directly with an airline or hotels through AMEX.

This card is ideal for a small few (those that will max out on the travel perks to make the $700 worth it) and even then if you don't have other amex cards in addition to platinum you aint playing the game right

wondering if I should learn how to use the gold the right way and wait till they offer me the plat or Jjst apply for the plat now while it seems to be hot in the streets. But with the traveling I plan to do for 2022, might be worth since that annual fee might get paid for with my trips

Straight from Flatbush
don't really do layovers.

I treat the Centurion lounge like and office, coffee spot, Free restaurant, Free bar (JFK one has a speak easy). I go there hours early, work from the laptop, relax, take advantage of the equinox services, and when its boarding time I just hit the terminal.

Ill go to JFK with no where to go, book a cancelable flight, hit the lounge, cancel the flight. and just use the facilities. eat and drink if I want too.
its really like a premium office/hangout spot people would pay top dollar for

its not though. you have to understand the game and that it's a perks card and not a points card. if the program fits you then its easy to get triple your moneys worth out the card

1. If your not intentional about maxing out on the benefits for the spend you do each month your not prospering. you should study all of their programs. Their "lower end" cards with little to no annual fee can have you earning properly

2. Gold is a card that can fit into a lot of peoples rotation nicely, you need to Dine out frequently. using that in conjunction with platinum is a nice blend of points and perks. your travel/dining/grocery bases are covered.

3. if you don't dine out frequently you have no biz with a Gold card, if you don't fly at least 1 round trip quarterly you have no biz with a platinum. people in those categories can eat swell of green or blue cash reserve with out the large expense.

i fit into that category 3. I’m using the gold like clockwork and don’t even pay attention to the points I got but now that I’m going to pay attention and use the app, it’s over. But like you, I wouldn’t even know I can get that lounge under the plat. I just let it do what it do until I see something pop up. I’m learning the game though through this.

The gold card is good for grocery shopping to. You don't have to just eat out all the time to justify it but it's best for the person that grocery shops during the week and eat out on the weekends. The platinum card has be advertise as a travel card for a while now so I would agree you would need to travel at lest five or six times a year to really justify it but the benefits that come with it is one of the best in business and I think that is why a lot of people hold on to it even if they aren't frequent travelers.

if you don't spend a lot dining out you should call and see if they will let you downgrade to preferred cash so you can kill it off groceries and gas. I would say def downgrade if you can keep the same trade line and age of account from the gold card.

The gold card is good for grocery shopping to .

its okay for grocery shopping, 4x points. but if you don't spend a lot on dining why are you paying $250 annual when you can get 6x points on groceries with only a $95 annual fee on blue cash reward PLUS 3x on gas that your leaving on the table.

the Gold card is clearly a poor decision in that scenario.(they need to do the math on how much spend on dining is worth it )

The platinum card has be advertise as a travel card for a while now so I would agree you would need to travel at lest five or six times

Word. I said 4 round trips but for me, if im not craving 6 times im downgrading the card. thats my personal math on how I value the perks

transfer them shyts to delta or whatever airline and eat. don't book hotels with it, low point value.

It’s it’s not a travel oriented card and if everyone with a gold card has access to the lounges they would never have space to accommodate that.

Agree, I think AMEX wants the gold card to be an everyday high end charge card. Even with just the platinum and black cards the centurion lounges are crowed now. My theory as to why the annual fee was raised was to make it a more exclusive card and also take away the two free guest next year to help solve the over crowding issue in the their lounges now.

i was going to wait until I’m ready to book flights and use the app with whatever points I accumulate and purchase that way unless you talking about something different…. I gotta really get this plat for these hotels then if I ain’t getting shyt on my gold for hotels… was just gonna wait another year but fukk it…

Plat gives you status with Marriott and Hilton properties. Its a nice perk when you use it because your entitled to some benefits but I personally don't value that perk highly since im not loyal to either one of those brands plus I do airbnb as much as I do hotel

Not necessarily, keep in mind the blue cash preferred has a 6,000 cap on 6% on groceries. People with families will blow past that in a half of year. If you are single and only care about cash back then that is the card for you. With the credits you get with the gold you are essentially paying only 10 dollars a year for the card but basicially get unlimited 4x on dining and groceries which can be way more valuable if used correctly. It just boils down to how you use the card.

don't disagree with any of that. wasn't even going to get into the nuance of of the 6k cap because we can't cover everything in passing but I think both of us have the same point that you gotta understand each program to chose correctly.
