Under normal circumstances, the travel credits and benefits totally cover the annual fee. Hell, the hotel benefits alone can cover you if you're doing it right. My understanding of it is that it's very much a travel card, in that your best shot at getting the annual fee back in value is really just the card itself for travel, and then reinvesting perks/points back into travel.

If you're not traveling a whole lot right now, or don't plan on ever being a heavy traveler, the Gold is definitely a better fit for regular everyday use in my opinion. I'm absolutely cleaning up on the 4x points on food and groceries.

I ended up going with the Gold for my purposes. I couldn’t justify the $700 for how I’d use the platinum

Nice!

I've been totally satisfied with my choice to pick up a Gold so far. Don't think I've even touched my debit card since I got it.

Yup. I'm a food breh, so roughly 80% of my swipes are either at restaurants or the grocery store.

These points are racking the fukk up.

Those look like a lot, but does the average consumer (you for example) even take advantage of those?
I use the Saks credit
The travel credit (not this year but I’m going to start again next year)
I gave the entertainment credit to my parents
The Uber credit for Uber eats
And I like the gold elite status for the hotels

You ain't lying, breh. Haven't even completed two cycles, and I'm already closing in on 100K points after the SUB, and that's with the lady and I actually spending less since we've been going out with friends lately, and typically spend less on those nights.

From my limited experience, AmEx is definitely a system that is incredibly generous as long as you're willing to put a little work in on how to exploit it.

It’s really when you pair the two that the benefits take off, but if you focus on just the $1000 AF (for both) you aren’t seeing the big picture.
