i was chopping it up with my supervisor the other day about what he thought of the democrats and their lax immigration policies (we’re both old school bay area leftists), and whether it actually does more harm than good when it comes to taking away jobs from natural born citizens. We’ve both been in the trades for decades, but he’s an og union guy on top of it, so he’s a bit more plugged into the labor market due to longtime connections. He made a good point that ultimately Mexicans aren’t really taking that many jobs from our field because most natural born Americans simply aren’t applying for these positions now. There’s actually a huge shortage for skilled laborers these days, because most of the guys born here now just aren’t built like men of days past.
Yeah, dude. 100%. If the Mexicans weren’t taking the jobs they are taking we’d have nobody to fill those positions lol.

I’m not trying to sound like an old head, cause I’m still just 31, this is like pretty hard work at times. A lot of young men aren’t tryna do this kinda work if they don’t have to and never really look at it as an option. I wish someone pushed me into doing this right out of high school, but I also don’t know I would have stuck with it then because I was pretty immature for a while into my 20s.

I think a lot of folks look down on skilled labors and a lot of that has to do with going into trades not really sold as a solid career option growing up. But fukk. Guys I work with in their respective fields make goddamn great money. And yeah some days you gotta do some strenuous shyt but I honestly enjoy it.

IT isn’t something that you just jump into either. Places aren’t going to hire you just because you have an A+ cert. They’ll grab an intern for most of that stuff. If all you have to show for yourself is an A+ and nothing else you’ll be lucky to be geek squad at Best Buy.
Yeah I’d have to get net+, sec+ and linux+ certs as well.

Do you think surgery tech is a good field?

I actually work in the OR! It's cool, but unless you want to do a first assist program the money is limited. First assist is a pretty dope job, you get to actual help perform surgery instead of just passing tools. Look into that, from what I understand they seem to make decent money. Actually, I just googled it and it's a six figure job. A lot of the surgical techs I work with are planning on getting into one of those programs. There are a lot of first assists at my hospital. So, if that's your end goal then I would definitely say go for it!

I'm actually planning on doing a PA program so I can assist with surgery as well. I really enjoy it.

I’ve kind of made this thread in the past but idk how to find it and I was in a bad place mentally. I cut drinking and have become more goal oriented. I have a girl now but even then I become single again I want this paper first.

My current plant job is straight but I def want to hit more than $700~$800 a week without having to work 6 days a week.

Currently looking at that A+ cert but what other options do I have?
Firefighting/EMS. Most major cities start at 50/60k, you can see close to 100k after a few years. Also you only work 2-3 days out the week so you have plenty of time to do other side hustle gigs

What are some extra stuff you need to know. I’m looking to get into IT auditing

1. okay so the A+ is very entry level and focuses on hardware. But you DO need to know the information, However going through the course and taking the exam isn’t the the most practical way to learn and to show you understand it. First thing is to BUILD your own pc. You will learn everything you’ll need to know just by going through this process.

2. Understanding where we are going technologically. E.g AWS, Azure, google cloud. They all have free tiers. sign up for a few, watch some google videos and familiarize yourself with these platforms.

3. NETWORKING. I don’t mean in the sense of meeting people(although important) I mean IT networking. Understand the protocols, what they do, the OSI model, IP model. How information flows from one place to another. This is important since having a general understanding of this will help you understand everything else. Spin up a home lab, set up a dhcp server, dns server, iscsi , install AD. This is all sysadmin work so you don’t need to be superstrong at it but will help greatly.

4. programming languages. You don’t need to be super strong with this either, but have to understand IT and programming is now hand and hand with one another. Google scripts(Java script), AWS(cli interface, python, etc.), automation(docker, Jenkins), devops. spend a few familiarizing yourself with a programming language.

5. familiarize with business apps. Office, SAP, spreadsheets, etc.

6. once you have gotten decent understanding of hardware concepts, networking concepts, cloud concepts, software applications concepts. Pick TWO compatible ones and dig deeper. E.g. Networking and security or AWS and Automation(scripting). IT is huggggeee. you’re not going to know everything or be strong at everything. Companies know this. Just familiarize yourself with as much of the concepts as you can then pick 2 that interest you most and key in on those.

For me it’s Cloud platforms(AWS, google cloud), scripting(JavaScript, python, sql) and some Networking. My job knew i wasn’t strong in JavaScript or SQL. I’m more familiar with python and AWS. But once you understand one going to another isn’t difficult. They are literally training me in JavaScript and SQL. Just because I already have an understanding of other languages.

HVAC, take night school classes at your local community college. I have a relative that majored in the liberal arts and couldn't keep a job with all the layoffs. Since he became a commercial HVAC tech, he has never been unemployed and jumped jobs three times getting at least 15% more in salary each jump. Plus has a company van to drive.

Or take night school to learn about real estate property management. When this latest real estate cycle ends, a lot of vacant properties will need management and upkeep, especially bank owned, so those skills could be handy.

Just yesterday you were clowning an old head for needing a ride home from work and here you sit, a young self-loathing no p*ssy getting f*cking dropout. And now we can add a hypocrite as well. Dumbass. Get your GED and take your ass to a dope HBCU, sit down, and STFU for four good years. You’ll thank me later.

Damn you didn't have to do him like that

Water treatment/waste water...

No chance of ever being laid off, work 15 days a month, make more money when you get certs.

Pay is decent, state benefits and retirement, pretty chill for the most part.

Can you expound a little bit on this? What do you mean 15 days a month? What kind of certs are you talking about? What's the pay like?

Theirs already established competition and gonna need bread just to get in. LLC, tools, van, business cards, etc.

You have to climb up the ranks. fukk that this country doesn’t value us.

You already making excuses as to why you can't do it.

Honestly - you're a loser. That's why you ain't shyt and won't be shyt.

Change your attitude, realize you live in a country with a ton of opportunity despite the bullshyt, and go make something of yourself. Otherwise you'll be back on the Coli posting this same thread in 4 months.
