For those of us who were around back then, The Source mics didn't mean sh*t. They gave Dah Shinin' 3 mics and then gave Lil' Kim's The Naked Truth 5 mics a decade later.

The Source ratings were wild inconsistent. People know what actual classics are, and what they aren't. Like I said, Beans was really dope, but nobody is bringing up any of his albums as the best ever, like they do Reggie's. Red basically ran sh*t from '92-'96. He was top bill during his run. Beans ain't never get to that level. Redman had a GOAT run. Dude is easily Top 10 all-time. Nobody regards Beans in that light. He was actually inspired by Redman, and that's why he wanted him on The B. Coming. But his legacy ain't touching Funk Doc's.
I was around back then too I was born in 85. I had all the publications and Source magazine was the hip hop Bible damn near they had the power to make or break careers. Now we know it was politics because Benzino co owned it and Made Men got like 4.5 mics. Still don’t take away from their grip and stamp on hip hop their mic ratings meant something during that era.
Yeah but Redman was heralded as one of the best legends goat contenders in real time. Beans really wasn;t. I didn't really start listening to Red until he became a caricature rapper
I think that was partly due to him being beside Jay. He was looked at like Jay lil man but reality he was putting out quality albums. He went toe to toe with Jadakiss. The Lox was once crew to DMX who was a heavyweight as well, Beans was crew to JayZ who was heavyweight as well. Beans was heavyweight.
no he aint
Now when we look at publications that says otherwise not to mention he outshined Jay and Bleek on the Dynasty. He battled Jada and stood tall. He a heavyweight. I think the problem people look at it because Jay was the top dog so Beans automatically the little man. But he dropped dope albums, got respect from all the mcs in the game. Go back and listen to them collabs with Him Jay and Scarface. Beans right there with them he’s not outclassed.

Red all day over beans. No slight on him. But horrible comparison.

But some might not Want to have this discussion but beans catalog shyts all over jada’s.

That’s another reason Dame gave Beans State property and was going to make him president of the ROC. State Property was going to be Beans crew he was a heavyweight. Camron was a heavyweight too.

I mean Jada had more lines but Beans had reality rap which made it easier to make a song and convey emotion. Bean was able to capture emotion like Scarface and DMX. You really felt what he was saying.

I think if Jay was to really retired when the ROC broke up if Beanie would’ve stayed out of trouble he was going to be the flagship artist of Rocafella him and Camron.

If you were born in '85, then you were 6-7 years old when Reggie dropped WTA.

That album changed the landscape for Def Jam, and Hip Hop. The Source was credible in 1992. We know what happened to the magazine after '94. It wasn't seen the same way anymore, and most heads stopped taking it seriously after classics started getting mad low mics. Labels were literally buying mics in the mid-90's to help their albums sell. So we can't speak on classics and then refer to The Source anymore. We all know what was going on with it back then.

They would get mad at artists who didn't show up for interviews and then drop their albums a mic or two on some personal sh*t. Later on, writers admitted that this was going on because certain MC's snubbed them. So nah, The Source was done being respected for their reviews mad quick into their run. They got too gassed and f*cked it up.
