I’m also not seeing how people are putting this show in a league with the wire, or even GOT - seasons 7-8 were shyt for sure, but GOT is still miles above it. This shyt is a soap opera more than drama
I actually thought that GoT was a soap opera. Mad Men is not in anyway a soap

50% is Draper and his drama with the many women he’s sleeping with, another 15% is a hysterical Betty - shyt is a soap given they keep running into/doing the same thing time and time again

Show is a clear exposé of what MAGA means to upper middle class conservative whites...poor whites clearly just want the Jim Crow days back

I liked reading Alan Sepinwall's reviews of each episode as he was great pointing out a lot of the symbolism and overarching themes of the different episodes.
That was required reading after each episode.

I mean, majority of people on the show were unhappy as hell though.

The show doesn’t paint that era as something to miss.

I think that's what you might think of the show if you look at the advertising "inspired" by the show after it aired, but I don't think the show itself was about that.

He's not a "REAL MAN".
Don Draper was a totally artificial invented character, the product of identify theft by some loser kid name "dikky". And he's worked his way up to the top of the advertising field, selling fake invented dreams to 1960's America in magazines and on TV.

I don't even mean this as a criticism of "The Sopranos", but you could argue that the appeal of Tony Soprano is even closer to what you describe above. You KNOW there are people who look at Tony Soprano like he's the last of a dying breed of "Men of Honor", they don't make them like they used to, etc.

Unhappy is a personal state, but the era of men being the breadwinner, treating their wives like trophies, sexual harassment in the work place, tons of affairs, the relative docility of women, ease of which they could acquire jobs (no experience or college necessary), lack of equality and inclusion of black people/minorities, no expectation that they play an equal part in child rearing - that’s definitely part of the MAGA ethos for conservative upper middle class white men

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven

and everything you named, is why people love this show... It's a look into those times, without having to watch the make believe world of, every man courted his wife for years and everyone had a car and home and happy life. No, what really went on was all the things listed above, and still, here's some people who overcame that shyt..

Peggy is trying to make it in a world where women ain't shyt. Don is faking his way through the rich playboy life and happy married life... Neither of which he really is. Roger trying to be young and have fun even though he's supposed to grow up by now... Pete trying to be the rich kid who lives up to what he's supposed to be. Joan trying to be more than t*ts... Betty wanting to be more than a housewife... The gay guy... The other down low gay guy... The black women who get hired.. Etc etc..

It's like "The Wire" of the 50s :mjlol:

By that I mean... Where most shows sensationalize those times.... Where shows made back in the times, look dated and never really captured it..... This show is the "raw" look into those times for "upscale" white people
