As much as I was a fan of capitalism as much as I'm starting to think this whole stock market industry is ruining the whole world. It's all based on growing profits and meeting your targets which get your stock price up. Somehow this all needs to be abolished and we need a cap on bonuses, salaries etc...

The world needs a big slap in the face or maybe even a running yakuza kick that knocks the living out of us.

Suppose you were in a crowd of people and you all witnessed someone drowning.

You are the only person in the crowd who can swim and are a trained lifeguard.

Would you jump in the water and attempt to save the person or would you yell out, 'I'll help you, but only if you pay me?'.

Lifeguards get paid to be on duty though.

Your argument makes no sense.

OR like EMTs/Ambulances/Emergency Medicine...they just BILL yo ass.

NOW...we can argue that some of these things need to be controlled for cost and made to be offered cheaper...but being agains profit itself?

I don't see that ending well.

That's the problem. If your SOLE motivation is profit, then morality/ethics mean nothing.

Do you guys think they should make nothing? or is it purely a matter of how much they make? :ld:

It's just a matter of doing what's 'right' rather than doing what makes money. I'd perform my job for free, unfortunately, with the way the world works now, I wouldn't be able to survive.

Willingness to help other human beings and advance society shouldn't come with a price tag, but they do.

This is the reality in which we live and also why there are only two 'races': rich and poor.

I'm truly surprised, I thought you were gonna try and defend Big Pharma:ehh:
The patent game is tricky. Allowing companies to recoup R&D cost does increase the speed of innovation, and ultimately produce more life saving drugs for the planet, something that could be weighed as a net benefit by any measure. But it is still govt. intervention.

The cost vs benefit here is close. :lupe:

I disagree with the disgust at how much they make though... it oozes of the zero sum fallacy.

I can dig all of the underscored, you want incentives and at the same time you want availability for the masses. Fine line, and that's without even going into patenting of seeds and whatnot.

But once you get into patenting, isn't it necessarily a zero sum game?

Instances like this prove it isn't, but in general, yes.

on a side note, its odd that a business that revolves around helping people and saving lives should be singled out while Hollywood and the Music industry go ignored... :wow:

It's singled out precisely because it saves lives, movies and music ain't in the same league as human lives breh
