Season 4 is nowhere close to being the best season. Season 4 was enjoyable, and the series finale was great. All statements can be true.
When you follow a story, you have to follow rules and accept limitations. No person would have made it to where Barry has gone in this series. This show would be over by episode 8 in the first season. But since it's a TV show, we can have the suspense of disbelief. Barry also isn't Madara Uchiha, who could defeat 50 enemies at once, so Barry going in and killing everyone all by himself is so unrealistic for the setting of the show. I know some folks wanted more fukkery. But at the end of the day, the story and characters should receive compelling writing that completes the story, not fukkery.
I feel like there were messages being made. For example, Barry walked through that store with hella guns and nobody cared. That was intentionally done to maybe address our current issues within our country. How the series ended could be a lesson and discussion about perception within itself too.
The transition from dark drama/comedy to completely dark with little to no humor over the seasons makes sense. Barry's peaceful and chaotic lives, between a hitman and aspiring actor, eventually clash, bringing everyone with him down. People have lost loved ones, their careers, and their sanity after welcoming Barry in. The tone for the last season makes so much sense.
I'm 50/50 on the time skip. On one hand, it slowed the series down and it felt out of place, random. On the other hand, the series finale wouldn't have worked if time hadn't passed. Literally, none of what we saw in the last two episodes is possible if Barry doesn't escape prison and remove himself from society for years.
Even though Sally is most likely the cleanest person out of this crazy bunch, her ending leaves us with distaste. She knows the truth but doesn't help Cousineau get free. NoHo Hank isn't respectable either, but at least you can justify his actions by claiming that's the life they lived. Sally was a civilian who ran away with a murderer, had a child with him, and doesn't even love the child. On top of that, it's all about her still. Something about that is so annoying and disrespectful, moreso more than everyone's actions if you ask me.
I'm going to miss this series so much. I got into this series during the first season and was watching weekly. It's literally a show that no one ever talked about other than us here who knew how fire the series is. So many memories and moments are created when you follow a show like this. And now it's over.
Great fukking series.
