I really liked the finale. The way the show handled redemption and consequences from early to the very end is something you rarely see in television. It almost feels like a deconstruction of a lot of prestige television where the main characters gets away with shyt until the final season, and audiences often feel like the rug has been pulled from underneath them when confronted with the reality that this guy has never truly been a good person. In Barry's case his flaws were on display in each season, with wild crimes and murders. Yet even going into S4 there were people who felt he was the good guy. I love how Hader played with that, really nailing down the final "he did bad things and should pay for it" sentiment until Gene opened fire. And then the way he flipped it with the movie, showing people how ridiculous the fantasy really is. Brilliant.
The other thing about Sally....the only way Gene goes to jail like that is if she refused to cooperate with police, or lied. I think she did that not only because Gene killed the man she loves, but because she did not want to admit to the world that she was trapped by another violent, abusive man. Barry never hit her or was physically abusive like her last boyfriend, but he certainly was emotionally abusive. More importantly she didn't want the world to know that she fell for another violent psycho. The world believing Barry was a kind, innocent hero makes Sally look good, too.
"I never stood up to him." Remember when she created that entire play about being a strong survivor of abuse, who confronted her boyfriend and defended herself?
