This is looks weaker when put in this context. Looks like the festivals made the wrong choices, or those movies were just not strong enough.
Also there's nothing wrong with crowd pleasers getting recognition. It's happened several times in the past and will continue. It's a box office hit, it's important, it's got great performances, and it's topical. All those factors normally lead to a nod.
I do like a statement film as much as anyone, but remember Crash? I don't want people saying that about this in 2026.

For sure, but will the casuals see that? Regardless, I think Lalaland is walkign away with everything, I wish it wasn't but it looks like it.

Why did Pharrell get snubbed on the soundtrack?

Also how did Amy Adams and Taraji both get snubbed in the lead actress no,?
Honestly hacksaw ridge and hell or high water are 1 or 2 tiers above the rest.

And i guess meryl is nominated because the oscars need ratings.

Why do I care about the casuals?

The casuals? Of course. This movie is hitting a chord with a wide group of people. Getting standing ovations and being talked about. It's not like crash which made little to no money and won an oscar. This, at least as of now, is a beloved movie. Let's let history take its course before saying how someone is going to view it

looking at that list further illustrates why i will never give a damn about award shows....the majority of those movies i have no urge to see, yet they are considered the best films of the year?...lol if you say so....to me, it seems like they hype up some random movie that most havent heard of/dont give a damn about watching, just to try to show they better than others....

I should be more clear - I just don't want this movies reputation to end up like Zero Dark thirty or Crash, in that people like now and 5 or 10 years later say is overrated.

isnt that how it usually is though?....at least to me that's the way it seems....these movies get a lot of hype, but when most people see it after the hype season is over, they dont understand why....

i looked back on the past 20 Best Picture winners to see which I would actually sit down and rewatch and I came back with these:

The Departed - probably
The Return of the King - probably
Gladiator - probably
American Beauty - probably

not one "definately" and only 4 of 20. The rest are 1 times viewers.
