No I’m not assuming. Social skills have definitely taken a nosedive in the 21st century for a number of reasons.You're assuming people aren't interacting with others humans because they have qualms with 21st century. That's a very big jump. Most people are still "trying", that's why they have the stories they have. Some people will play the sideline but everyone isn't cut out for the game.
This may be a difference in gender and resulting perspectives, men have to be more cerebral than not as consequence is typically a bigger thing for us. We always have to figure out if a particular glass of juice is worth the squeeze or not, and that doesn't just apply to women/relationships. Many men with no options can work towards trying to be somebody's boyfriend, and any man with options can just pick one and "settle down". The question for each man is "is it worth it?"
And women also ask those questions many times. But none of that excuses overthinking and exaggerating nonsense to avoid dealing with social awkwardness.
