Atlanta is known as a ‘Black Mecca.’ Jobs data tell a different story.

Atlanta's big employers have been hit over time too. Bellsouth was huge when I was growing up for any type of job, especially engineering. Then they got bought by AT&T and pretty much slashed down back in 2006. Coke has been slowly laying off too and UPS/Home Depot etc. are saturated.

Atlanta's problem is partially it never had a huge manufacturing base and rose on two things: the service economy and real estate. Once the 2008 crash came the residential and commercial housing building, and all the related jobs, never came back as strong so the city is struggling.
Put this into context fam. Real estate in Atlanta and the metro area is crazy right now and not looking back.

I said this in a thread years ago about Atlanta, and this is really the case with a lot of American cities even in the South. You cannot just pack up go there and hope to land a good job. You need to be plugged in. You need to either know someone there or check in with these people in advance if possible. If you know a trade or can work with your hands there plenty of work but people with soft degrees can still find good work but you also have to be ok living outside the Atlanta or even in more rural areas where business are expanding.

Some of y’all are delusional about how easy it is to get up and move.

Finance dude was in the industry in ATL so he has put down permanent roots. If he were fresh out of school with a year or two, sure.

After a decade, certain jobs don’t want to pay ten years of experience what he’s worth. Plus expense of moving. Charlotte business knows it can get those fresh out of school or already in Charlotte for way less hassle.

Working at Wendy’s is easier than moving? :mindblown: Worst case is there’s a Wendy’s in the new city.

Real talk, I can’t respect a man with such poor planning skills.

Exactly.... I see it all the time in Los Angeles

Transplants run here thinking they going to get on cause they can rap, act or looking for a change, then within a year they went back to Iowa or Kansas cause they never had anything lined up, rent running $1,000 a month and that’s just in Compton and they all working at gas stations, restaurants trying to perform their acting or singing skills in front of you and shacking up with 5 roommates or getting turned out in the Hollywood hills with sex and drugs
This post is 100% facts

I have no clue what your house is worth or how many bedrooms you have.

But nikka, $600??

A 5 bedroom house in Valdosta is 69k. That mortgage alone is probably around $380. With 5 rooms that’s about $75 a room. Let’s say that house had just two rooms. That’s still about $190. Tack on 50 for the extra bathroom, another $50 for utilities and another $50 just for your own profit.... I’m not getting anywhere near $600.

You said GA/FL border, something doesn’t add up. :patrice:

You got to give us some more details. It ain’t like Georgia ain’t known for its hustling ass nikkas.:mjpls:
All in his pockets:mjtf:

To top it off they are all probably still paying for student loans.

Dam the old saying still holds true “black folks are always in a recession”

Only a small percentage of us is truly thriving. The central bank needs to set aside special loans for black entrepreneurs so we can create jobs for our people. This is crazy.

Dude if you think RACIST COPS and DISCRIMINATION only exists in the SOUTH then it's pretty obvious YOU DONT TRAVEL OUT YOUR COMFORT ZONE much

Or you have yet to receive your complimentary "nikka wake up call" yet

Don't worry it's coming to your unaware looking black azz

That train is never late
:umad:

Don't let your little stint as a commerical rapper with GUNIT fool ya Breh

THERE IS NO SAFE SPACE FOR BLACK PEOPLE IN AMERIKKKA

But regardless inspire of all that as someone who has lived roughly 20 years here in the south as a east coast transplant

I NEVER LET THAT STOP ME FROM REACHING MY GOALS OR SUPPRESSING MY RESPONSIBLITIES TO MY FAMILY

THATS AN EXCUSE........

AS A BLACK MAN YOU SHOULD NEVER GIVE UP...

Our ancestors went thru WORST

Everywhere...You never there.
...You got to be like that old western from the 60s "Have Gun Will Travel" or should I say "Have Degree Will Travel"

You know I’ve BEEN touting that ... everybody wanna live in a trendy city tho :snoop:

... These cacs are really trying to phase us out. ..
Highly low key tho .

As a native who's seen the traffic become ridiculous over the last 20 years, I say keep the negative articles coming...But seriously, there are plenty of $50k - $100K opportunities for those with skilled trades like electricians and plumbers. ...

That’s not how ATL was marketed in the community tho ...

Same thing is going to happen to Nashville. Got offered a gig their and quickly turned it down. Cost of living is skyrocketing and wages aren’t keeping up Only going to get worse with tech companies moving in.

Plus, as I’ve quoted my uncle in here plenty of times “Atlanta is a dream. Folks move here and think they’re going to magically live the life. All they see is the nite life. Go downtown or Buckhead to the parts where it matters during the day and that’ll tell you who runs this city”
Your uncle is a wise man :wow:

In Atlanta like most cities I learned it's not what you know..it's WHO YOU KNOW

Nepotisim is strong in Atlanta...the only cats I really see eating in thier field are frat brothers and sorority sisters or people with great networking skills...
(Get some WHITE FRIENDS with Corporate ties)

Because the city is saturated ..you have to stand out by knowing someone plugged in or you will fall on your face ..

Like an ex of mine did....

She had to stay in a extended hotel as well....and she is a college graduate who moved to ATL area

Loves to tout her academic accomplishments just like these people in that article but at the end of the day it don't mean jack shyt if your not CONNECTED

That's a cheat code a lot of people don't know or take the time to understand. There is a reason why my daughter does gymnastics :mjpls:, but she loves it and it gives me time to chop it up with people in the know.

:pachaha: already got one contract out of it........:ohlawd: the game

I’ve been in the Atl almost two years now and the poverty and homelessness is something else. A combination of picking shytty majors and a focus on Entertainment careers has really held back the black population here. The burger flipper guy is an anomaly, he SHOULD be able to find work in finance even if it’s as a bank teller. People need to learn real life desirable skills. Healthcare, trades and Stem right now are in demand fields. Stop trying to be models, rappers, ig comedians and actors.

Also networking is BIG and one thing I’ve noticed while maneuvering around the corporate world of Atlanta is that the blacks that are successful are very articulate and don’t necessarily have an accent typical of the area. Very Russel Wilson-esque which allows them to maneuver different social circles easily.

People are dumb as hell for moving with nothing lined up. That's how you know it's mostly broke bums, because what smart person is gonna move without knowing the job market? Yeah dawg when I get this Associates in Sociology I'm moving to ATL:MJokdawg23:
