you could say im agnostic, i neither believe or disbelieve. i see no reason to have an opinion on deities since there is no proof of them, but i also feel no need to assert that there are none because i could never really know that

now, given that you know that about me, i go to funerals because i am a humanist, i think life is valuable, i love my friends and family so death is tragic enough to put me into a grieving process that can be helped by being in the presence of loved ones, hearing new things about the deceased that i never knew about them from others that knew them, etc. and i think as a symbolic gesture it is good for the community to see life appreciated since it might in some way impact people's behavior toward each other while alive

Okay.

Do you view a funeral more for the grieving family or truly honouring the one that died? Also do you believe there is some sort of life after Life, a continuation?

That has nothing to do with me.

Now back to the thread premise.

Do you not see the irrationality of a symbolic gesture of a funeral, especially that of an atheist? Or perhaps your ability to symbolize is the same ability that Christians or Muslims utilize when they look to the world and the people in it?

Doesn't sound so irrational now does it?

I'm more or less an apathetic agnostic/atheist, so I'll throw in my two cents...

I don't see the irrationality of paying respects, grieving with loved ones, etc. of attending a funeral of someone you care about; religion or lack thereof is irrelevant.

It's probably the last time you'll see this person IN person, so you may want to be there just to be around them, reminecse with friends and family, or cry your eyes out.

Being atheist doesn't mean that you're an emotionless robot or can't appreciate things in a symbolic fashion.

(Most, I can't speak for all) Nonbelievers aren't gonna be like ":yeshrug: I'm not even sad. That's life" if their mom or dad suddenly or look at a sunrise and be like "That's the earth making another revolution so we can't see the sun for the quadrillionth time:birdman:"

Nah, they'll probably be devastated and be like "It's a brand new day, people:blessed:" respectively.

Nonbelievers know that a funeral symbolizes the grieving process and/or a celebration of the life of a person they cared enough about to show up to in the first place.

Religion doesn't really factor in, from my perspective. :ehh:

for the most part, i think most people want people to care that they died, so i think funerals are usually both for the dead and the survivors

no, i dont believe in an after life. im not saying there is not one, but i have no way of knowing that right now and there does not seem to be any credible evidence for it

Paying respect and grieving to a dead body that gives no fukks about your respect and grieving. Sounds like fool play.

Around the 7 minute mark, he says something like "Do we have a good reason to believe God created the heavens and the Earth? Of course! Those are the cosmological arguments, the design arguments for the existence of God, that are so compelling, even the stalwart atheists have caved in under their force". Not saying that such a decision would or should convince someone else, but exactly who are these "stalwart atheists" that are convinced by these arguments?? Not saying this never happens, but I think the larger trend is that of people leaving the church due to realizing the lack of justification for their theological beliefs.

Otherwise, I'm not mad at the case he made for his beliefs. I disagree with him, and don't understand how he can find some of those aforementioned arguments compelling, but it's at least a consistent position to have.
