When drug dealing rap COMPLETELY took over late 90s, spearheading the mediocre mixtape scene of the 2000s.

Sure guys like gunit, lox and dips were good; but the influx of the new punchline mixtape rapper of the month helped start the age of everyone sounding the same. I can barely tell the difference between all those rappers; who are obviously on for reasons other than talent. For every 50 cent or jay z, was 3 dozen cassidys, mims, maino, tru life, postaboy, cory gunz, etc

Thats why most of thems rappers careers never made it out the 2010s while most 90s big hitters who these guys were set to “replace” had waaaaay better careers.

Once Toronto became a legit hip hop market with Drake's ascent, it was over. Though I'd say, NY rappers descent in relevance was gradually happening before then, probably as far back as the 2Pac/Biggie heyday...

But once a major star from Canada broke thru as the biggest star in America, abd showed Toronto as a viable hip hop market, it deaded the esteem of being a NY rapper completely. Since then, if you're a hot NY rapper you get love---->but nobody gives a fukk if that rapper is from NY...

Til this day, who does Toronto have besides Drake? Drake is more known as a Jewish rapper than a Toronto rapper.

When other regions started getting shine and instead of being trend setters, they started following trends, and making the worst b-grade versions of what was going on in other regions. Their answer to Future was Desiigner. Their answer to trap production was hybrid Drill. Both are ASS.

I’ll be nice and say ‘06. But in reality it was like ‘02-‘03 when 50 blew up, he wasn’t your traditional NY rapper and forced their best NY rapper at that time and arguably all time retire for a few years

Definitely by 2007 when MIMS came out with This Is Why I’m Hot is when I realized it. So it was probably a year or two before that. I’d say by 06 at the latest it was a wrap.

Why does it even matter....good music is good music regardless of what region it originates from :manny:

It matters because the shift has as much to do with separatists mentality and Jim Crow as it did the actual music. NYC even beyond the music clowned the south about how nikkas is slow and country and wack at hip hop. shyt was all good in hip hop til they lost all creativity culturally, could not go wood, watched the south rise, then subsequently tried to backtrack and dikkrdide. They stopped innovating and started emulating.
