my uncle is a trumpet player he's very into this topic
basically he says that japan was always a big listener of jazz music even when he was playing in the 80's 90's
They follow John Coltrane,miles Davis, count Basie, etc and study them like crazy
the difference is japan passed trumpet playing down to their kids but jazz died in the states because of the inherent racism and rap took its place as the pioneering genre

Warren G was helping produce for Korean artists a few years ago. I suspect other black artists are doing the same thing. Which is why their music sounds so black.
