But what's way too fast?

Someone puts up a song/video and it's all over the world in 2 minutes.

I remember when Purple Swag and Peso came out and it made me :leon: and I looked forward to his project.

I mean LiveLongASAP wasn't his first project

ASAP Rocky - Deep Purple // Free Mixtape @ DatPiff.com

came out in July of last year and had Purple Swag on it.

And what do they need to accomplish with their music before getting press or looks from other artists?

I mean they should at least have a local fanbase :beli:
it's not clear that his NY fanbase existed before his blog fanbase :shaq:

Purple Swag and Peso started buzzing on the internets, then LiveLoveAsap caught that major internet buzz to a point where cats like Rosenberg played his songs. And a Harlem dude made an offer and he took it. Then 6 months later he OPENED for Drakes Opening acts.

And as far as having a local fanbase, it's 2012.

it's a term to describe people with suspect come-up stories meaning they were artificially planted as a "hot new underground artist on the come up" by industry people

red flags include coming up way too fast or getting major looks from other artists or the media before accomplishing anything with their music yet

it's also suspect if you're supposedly a locally rooted artist but your own hood never fukked with you until the white media started supporting you out of nowhere

im confused. why is that a bad thing? yall tryna say he not from harlem or something?

it's not like he's some random local rapper in the midwest opening for a Masta Ace show he was on the whole tour

who cares if his set was first he obviously can't go after :heh:

Why if you can put your music online?

I mean sure 20-30 years ago you had to do talent shows and local clubs to get some buzz and get noticed, but now people send shyt to blogs and upload videos to youtube.

Soulja Boy have a local fanbase before Crank Dat went big or did he just post shyt on soundclick and myspace?

Kendrick Lamar brought him on there, I believe that they have relations through Schoolboy Q. He's hot and knows the right people, that's why he's there. He had one of the most critically acclaimed mixtapes of 2011, he had two of the hottest underground singles. He already had 2 videos with 10 million+ views. Most artists get found on the internet these days, cats are not trying to catch the streets like Jeezy or grinding on the low ghostwriting, doing cameos and shyt like Rozay.

Soulja Boy had buzz in Atlanta first
or at least I think so idk his history

that sending shyt to blogs and uploading to youtube shyt only works if you have support :snoop: most likely from industry people

also ASAP's whole presentation is different and he's the type of rapper you'd expect to have a local following first
he's not a pop artist or some weirdo nomad like Jay Electronica

That Youtube -> instant success route is like a 1 out of 10 shot even with the first part completed

how many rappers on Youtube get mad views but no major looks :youngsabo:

I just remember before "LiveLoveASAP" came out, Complex ran an online article with a short list of new artists that you needed to listen to. I recall ASAP being on that list along with Action Bronson, Mr. Muthafukkin' Exquire, Trouble, and a few others.

The big deal about ASAP was his sound (Harlem rapper w/ Houston influence), the ASAP mob meaning and gimmick, and the really eye-catching thing was the video for "Purple Swag"...

I just remember bumping this all summer and people were like :why: "Who's that white chick in the video with the gold grill"? Why is he wearing a "fukk Swag" shirt when the hook is saying "Swag"? Dude just had an interesting...gimmick/storyline or whatever you want to call it.

It's kind of similar to when Odd Future was making noise by doing numbers at their and having legends check them out... then Tyler did the "Yonkers" video.

His shyt was posted to blogs and shyt, cause it was well produced, new sound, new swag and people liked it. Like Odd Future. They were pushed by indie magazines like Sputnik, Pitchfork, Spin, pop matters etc. Cause unlike hiphop, those indie pop/rock magazines will post anything they find on the internets that is special and the hipsters will listen to it until they go pop. It's funny that hipsters are becoming tastemakers for hiphop

Odd Future = most obvious industry plant of all time

They were managed by a former Interscope exec with close ties to Eminem :childplease:
