As a whole, the NBA has lost around 45% of its viewership since 2012.

This is also why WBD was reluctant to pay all of that over the next ten years. Disney and Universal might be looking at those cable deals like :patrice: in a few years... they all know cable is dying and streaming hasn't taken over unless your name is Netflix.

This is what this board has turned into.

A haven for disinformation.

If it wasn't enough these #BothSides cats infect other subforums with their bullshyt, they're now leaking in the sports section. Notice how there's absolutely no attempt at taking down the link and providing a reputable one, just running with the same shyt like nobody will notice they use Right-wing propaganda to fuel their beliefs.

Even worse, making up a blatant lie about the league losing near half it's viewership.

It's crazy- you provided substantial facts and people are still overlooking it and taking the OP as true

Yeah but the casual fan isn't thinking that nuanced. You can generate threes in different ways but to a casual fan they just see threes going up.

The problem is, this is a nuanced conversation

There is not one singular reason for why viewership has changed, and I feel like the disconnect is people make it seem whatever their gripes with the league are, is “the reason”.

If it was just about wanting a more traditional style of play, why aren’t ratings up for Nuggets games? They shoot nearly the least amount of 3s, their offense runs through their center who also operates out of the post more than any other player in the league. And he’s the most statistically dominant player in the league right now.

Shouldn’t Jokic have a legion of stans if that’s the case?

Well I gave my list of reasons in my first post here
There's a multitude of reasons as others have echoed:

1. Style of play/no variety in the game at large

2. NBA Media is the worst in sports, and they've made it so fans don't have to care about the regular season as much because "Rangzzzz"

3. One and done killed college basketball which in turn hurt the NBA because on a large scale, nobody knows who the fukk these guys are unless you're name is Zion Williamson or most recently, Cooper Flagg

4. Foreign born players aren't necessarily moving the needle in America

I say all this as a basketball junkie btw, this is just what I perceive a casual fan would say as to why they lost interest

Everyone felt a way when the NFL didn’t allow people to post highlights.

I called it a smart move. You control how people ingest the game.

As I wrote in my article in 2001… The NBA’s problem is that they focused too much on the back of the jersey rather than the front of the jersey. And that all started when they left CBS.

You absolutely need stars in league, but NFL fans will still support their team no matter how awful they are or who is playing QB. There's a massive difference with that between leagues.

It's been building. I think Bron going to Miami and building that super team rubbed a lot of fans and former players the wrong way. And from there it's just gotten worse and worse.

I hope Steph never leave GS, it wouldn't be right. He's built a legacy over there and it's easy to watch that team because of it. If you think about Paul George, if he stayed with the Pacers, his legacy would be that he's a Pacer legend like Reggie trying to win a championship and that storyline would write in it off itself. Same with the OKC Harden/KD/Westbrook. It's why I'm glad the C's didn't listen to all the bozos talking about breaking up Tatum/Brown. Those guys should be C's for their entire career.

I'm not against player movement, but if there's gonna be this type of movement for superstars, then the league should rethink about how they're marketing their product and focus on teams otherwise it's just gonna be a casual sport to follow.
2019 you had player movement that would turn off all types of fans. NBA Stan’s don’t see how this can spur casual viewers on the sport.

KawhI leads Toronto to their first title and declines to defend the title :dahell:, then tries to build a super team elsewhere :mindblown:

Bron leaves Cleveland and the consensus is that this isn’t a basketball move

Kyrie quits on the celtics and tries to form a superteam

KD goes to Brooklyn and tries to form a superteam :what:

Everyone says that, yet the biggest ratings draw is Steph Curry of all people...

The greatest shooter of all time and a top 3 PG in NBA history draws ratings while a team full of Joe Somebody's can't even though they're emulating his stule of play.

I'll never understand it.:skip:

No defense is boring to watch.

3 pt chucking fest is a problem. It makes the game boring as well.

But let's be real

Free throws and the means of getting them is the real culprit. I look at KAT slightly elbow someone and they go down like a soccer player. Meanwhile, Joe Flacco getting sacked and everyone saying "damn dude is old but can still play"

What’s with the defense shyt? Lol.

Are y’all suggesting that players are standing idly on the court and letting offensive players do whatever they want?

I watch Knicks games regularly I don’t see that. It’s been a regurgitated talking point going on close to 20 years.

Basketball is a free flowing up and down game throughout its history it’s been high scoring much longer than it’s been low scoring. Its golden era that blew the league up the 80’s was high scoring.

Idk what perspective you’re thinking of, but the point of that post was in reference to the player’s. The very reasoning for load management is to make sure you last the season. If the season is shorter, then there’s less of a chance of that occurring

I understand what you're saying. And in my opinion (which I could be very wrong) full strength, fully healthy non elimination games still will not make people tune in. Even if we make the changes that everybody wants, less threes, more mid range, post game, calling travels, eliminating foul baiting. People would still just wait to see the changes in the playoffs.
