Who said I denied it? My very first words say that it is not overrated in general. All those albums you named I was around for. The problem is people forget that not everything in the 90s was flawless, there were gimmicks, industry plants, white guys who were going to take over and ruin the genre, negativity, etc, etc, etc.

Certainly if someone wants to look like a very knowledgeable Hip Hop head and not some johnny come lately listener they are going to cite albums from the 90s that are deemed classics. That doesn't mean the albums are not good but to be like 'Nah fukk Drake, let me know when he makes a Illadelph Halflife' it comes off as hipster-esque and a bit of a put on.

Well when people are saying how great the 90's were, that doesn't mean they're denying that any bad music came out during that time period either. That kind of goes without saying. The focus is on the good music that did come out, and that really isn't coming out anymore.

People go overboard with it all the time.

There is plenty of good music coming out still. This idea that everything in the 90s was flawless and everything now is trash is the exact issue I am pointing out.

It's not that there isn't any good music coming out (although people do say that), it's just that there's nothing truly great. Like I said above, for me personally I don't feel like there have been any dope/flawless/borderline classic type albums that have come out in the last decade or so (the last of which being The Doc, GRODT, Black Album). So I do think there has been a drop off. But part of that is just my taste in music. There have been good albums to come out, but nothing that I've thought all that highly of. I don't care for albums like LIG, GKMC, Lupe and Cudi's supposed classics, Kanye's stuff, etc as much as others on here.

Nothing is great off the bat and in fact some albums get a nostalgic bump long after the fact. For example, I remember people complaining about Dip Set a ton. If you fast forward to now plenty of people think of them favorably and their music did influence artists now. People complained about Ice Cube by his third solo but now if you go back it seems like harsh criticism for what is an overall quality artist.

Why does everything need to be classic or flawless to be good? Lupe has put out some great material. GKMC was a great album. Kanye has produced tons of quality music. Is everything he touched gold? No. Neither were other artists. I bet you that you will hear 'Stronger' 10 years from now at some party of event when you get :flabbynsick: and it's going to make you feel good.

Well there was no nostalgia involved in the 90's albums I got hooked on, because it was my first time hearing them. It didn't take years to pass for me to think highly of the good early 2000's albums.

And I already said I don't care for Kanye, Stronger included lol (I'd rather listen to the daft punk alive version) :ld:

I never said it did. I'm just saying if we're comparing the quality of current stuff to the 90's

Sorry but you didn't just purely get into 90s Hip Hop because you had the added benefit of people telling you what to listen to and not having to wade through a lot of the shyt that did come out like some of us did. If someone told you what exactly to listen to from 2000 on you could hear a lot of quality and then get tricked into thinking it was mostly good. So there is more involved to it when you go back.

While you went straight for Illmatic you didn't have to bother with the Coolio album, you skipped over the MC Hammer album which ton of people shyt on, Brian Austin Greene and the Fred Durst types, you skipped over groups like Arrested Development, etc

I skip over current music too tbh. I don't keep up and listen to every single thing that comes out, I actually listen to very little new rap. I don't have to listen to all the newest stuff - even in the early 2000's I would listen to very little. There's a bunch of good albums that I haven't even really listened to yet (from all years). But like I already said, any bad music that came out in the 90's or that comes out now is irrelevant to comparing generations. The discussions is in regards to the good music.

And 2000 actually was a pretty good year. You couldn't trick me into thinking 2004 was a good year for example though because there really wasn't much good that came out.

That's your opinion breh. Everyone is going to have their own personal top 10 list.

And you didn't do a good job at bigging up the 70's/80's, hardly even mentioned them in the OP. Your motive seemed more to be to talk down to the 90's. You even had confused posters in here thinking you were trying to give praise to the 2000's.

I think you may need to edit the title breh because you're raising a great question that will get overlooked because the thread title can be misinterpreted. That way you can keep the bullshyt out and have some real discussion
