Are sports team allegiances in your city/area racially, culturally, geographically or generationally divided ?

Growing up in Texas I noticed the older folks in my family had a disdain for pretty much all of the old SWC teams. I never understood why, until I got into the history of those teams as an adult. See those schools held on to the racism long after schools like Alabama and other deep south SEC teams embraced black athletes. Even when they did begin to recruit black players, the scars remained for previous generations of black folks in Texas. And the top players were steered away by their parents usually. U of H was the only team in the SWC that blacks embraced, because they were basically the first of those SWC schools to really recruit black players from Texas. Even til the day alot of the older folks in my family passed they didn't fukk with:
University of Texas
Texas is A&M
Texas Tech
SMU
TCU
Baylor
And all those schools suffered in the 70s and 80s even up until the mid 90s because of their limited or just flat-out refusals on recruiting the top home grown black players for all those yrs. Some of the dudes on my high school football team and historically from my high school should've at the very least had a straight pipeline to Texas Tech considering it was literally directly up the street. But nope, we were a class 5A school and they stayed recruiting dudes from 3 and 4A schools and legacy recruits and tou go and look at how sorry they were in the 70s-80s. And dudes from the neighborhood were going on to be all-American and highly drafted NFL players but the racist university down the street didn't even give them a first look .

That was definitely during the 80s when the Mets had Strawberry, Gooden, etc. I'm a 90's baby, but I got older fam that grew up in the 80's and were Mets fans despite being from The Bronx.

I remember an old coworker of mine in his 40's telling me if you was a real New Yorker back in the day, you was a Mets fan. He would always say "The hood didn't fukk with no Don Mattingly" :heh:

100% facts...
Exactly. Like I said, nikkaz didnt not fck with the Yankees. No matter how much MLB try to push them on us. I guarantee there was more Yankees fans outside of NYC then in it.
We liked the star power and dysfunction of the Mets. They symbolized NY lol

I ain't never hear people talking about the Yankees.. slowly u started to see them become cool and nikkaz rocking Yankees fitteds and sht.

But I'm definitely seeing the trend shift back.

Cowboys = Blacks, Asians and Latinos plus older whites. Real Dallasites bleed silver and blue mostly. Younger generation is all Packers, Niners or Patriots fans. Lots of transplants that are fans of other teams at some of these games. Stereotypical fan = middle aged Latino male with the latest Dak jersey, a big azz Ford F250 that's Cowboys Blue and a wife with impossibly large tetas and a tattoo on her ankle.

Mavericks = was more for the Highland Park (rich white kids) set when Nash and Dirk were here. It slowly became more balanced over time. With Luka, we see a lot more pro athletes, entertainers etc., sitting courtside. Probably the most accessible fan experience. Stereotypical fan = some white collar Millenial that drives either a Subaru or a Lexus/Audi...but catches the train downtown for the game.

Stars - best in-person experience, especially if you sit close. By far the whitest fanbase but it's more city dwellers. Stereotypical fan = similar to Mavs fan but with 25 extra lbs, more facial hair and a love of craft beer.

Rangers - this honestly feels like the least "Dallas" ish team. Stars/Mavs are quintessential Dallas. Cowboys are Dallas but their brand is bigger than that. Rangers feel like the team for all of North Texas...especially white people that think the NFL/NBA is too Black and NHL too Canadian/European. Average fan = medium-thick white girl in a tank top with big titties, daisy-duke shorts and cowboy boots. A white boy named Kody rocking a Rangers polo shirt, blue jeans and cowboy boots. A Mexican couple that is slightly overweight. 2 small kids maybe 3. All rocking the same jerseys.

I know Dominicans would tell me they wouldn't fukk with the Yankees because they thought George Steinbrenner was a racist, so when Pedro, Sosa, Manny, etc. all came up, they started claiming those teams. The Yankees have won many of em back, but until maybe 09, Wash Heights was Red Sox turf. (back in DR, they claim the team of the player that's from their area). Besides that, it's mostly dependent upon your borough

Yankees- BX/Manhattan/SI//some Brooklyn/Tri-State.
Mets- Queens/slightly more than half of BK/much of Long Island

the Met/Jet/Net fan has always been viewed as the working man, the hungry man, mainly because they haven't seen a title in damn near 40 years at anything.

Giants- most of NYC/Jersey
Jets- some Queens/much of LI

Islanders- Long Island only
Rangers- everywhere else

Knicks- never had to share the fanbase, so the breakdown there at worse was generational. The Nets had a chance at capturing all the younger fans had Kyrie/KD/Harden worked out. The Nets are reduced to that fan who loves Brooklyn so much they think it should be its own town.
Overall, the fanbase in NY for hoops is 60% Knicks, 30% everyone else, 10% Nets.

NYCFC = quickest franchise I've seen to claim much of the city. Red Bulls might as well stop fronting and change their shyt to NJ Red Bulls because NY is Blue.

Politically, for a city that is as blue as NYC is, man you just assume all these fans are MAGA. Go to any stadium/park and you'll see the bald headed off duty cop rockin a Under Armour fleece and khaki shorts in 50-60 degree weather who snarls at you if you're slow to get up for the anthem

That’s incredible. SMU was the only premier program in the SWC in the 80s and that’s because they were paying players.

Oklahoma, OK State and Colorado was probably taking all the top Texas talent.

Nebraska too.

Low key that's why UT only has 4 nattys, when realistically, they should have at least 6...maybe 7 like Oklahoma.

The Black folks here weren't all into the SWC because it was more racist than the SEC....which is saying something.

Big 8 took advantage for years...which is why OU, Nebraska, Colorado etc., were feasting and dominating. Notice how when Mack Brown started locking down Texas, the the rest of the old B12 turned to garbage except for OU. Too much talent just between Dallas, Houston and the Piney Woods. More talent than Florida because you get speed, fat boys, good kickers (see Justin Tucker) and elite QBs....not just fast corners and receivers.

Yep. In addition, the 80s and 90s in particular the mid 80s to the mid 90s also had lots of the best Texas players leaving the state. The ones that did stay in the 90s went to A&M but they were under sanctions. Keeping players in state changed when Mack Brown got there as he emphasized that. It just so happens that it came at the same time as Bob Stoops and ou rise. But Mack emphasizing the state affected the other Texas programs and the oklahoma programs and is why the Big 12 South started to dominate that conference back then.

This and I suspect that the Mets replacing the Giants and Dodgers have something to do with it, especially with the Dodgers breaking the color barrier. I think the Mets inherited some black fans from that.
