I wanted to take this thread seriously but idiots ruined it

Premo is EXTREMELY talented. There were PLENTY of people who could afford to buy equipment and/or studio time to make beats. Although there was a barrier of entry that involved cost, it wasn't nearly as easy as it is today because you actually had less sample time (sometimes nikkas literally had 3 seconds of sample time, now you have endless amounts), you actually had to go to the record store and dig for samples, also premo didn't have the blueprint young nikkas have today. It's easy to create hip hop beats when you have 20 something years before you to stand upon. How many great producers were chopping things in the 80s before Premo came in the game? I rest my case.

but yes the Production has become a bit more important in the sense that a lot of these rappers are carried by it these days.

Hasn't this always been the case? The difference now is that there are more dope producers, because anyone with a laptop can make a beat or imitate something. Back in the 90s having a Premo, Pete Rock, Timbaland, Dre, Swizz, etc beat was a big deal. In the 2000s a Dre, Timbaland, Kanye West, Scott Storch, etc beat was a big deal.

The concept of the big producer has changed now, and dudes have short runs on top instead of prolonged relevance. Boi1da was everywhere when Drake's first album dropped, then Lex Lugar took over. Young Chop had a run, Mike Will had a run, now Mustard is that dude. And all their beats pretty much sound the same.

:what:

Premo didn't have any equipment that any other producers didn't have. for most of his career, Premo's basic set up has been an MPC & a bunch of records.
I am talking about the general public...
The producers of Premo's era were kind of in an elite position because they had access to equipment that many young people could not afford...

It was MUCH harder for a young aspiring beatmaker to get a hold of an MPC back then...

Today, all you need is FL Studios, and that is available for "free"

This is the point I am trying to make...

how many of the FL over night "producers" will still be in demand in 25 years tho? and it's not like all the producers of the 90s straight up went and bought their first equipment, RZA stole or borrowed his first ASR from a guy that he knew from the block, a lot of guys had the records & ideas but didn't know how to use the equipment or didn't have it, so the engineer had to loop it up or at least allow them to use the MP or whatever sampler the studio had.

I've always considered Producers more important

When Beats By the Pound left, nolimit was finished
Beats by the Pound basically created artist. Nolimit had some guys with skills, but the majority of them were street nyggas. They weren't rappers.

When the diplomats weren't getting those heatmakerz beats, they were finished imo

I'm sure you got people here who have been in the studio with artist & were completely unimpressed. The producer had to make them sound good.

Hell you can create an artist. Get someone with a good voice, give him some production, & hand him some lyrics & tell him to spit it.

I've been saying instrumental music is going to become very popular soon. Watch.

:mindblown:

Instrumental music is going to become very popular? It always has been, what the fukk.

Outside of rap, you could achieve massive success doing instrumental music, some of the greatest musicians who ever lived had no lyrics to accompany their songs and people came to hear their music for them, not because of some rapper.

Electronic music is the most obvious example here, the reason you don't think it's big is because you don't follow it, but make no mistake, many people do. There's TONS of money there, in the concerts. Go look up some of the biggest concerts ever, you'll see some electronic instrumental artists top the list.

Producers and rappers are equally important in an absolute sense, you can't really argue that either is more important, it depends on the situation. There's MILLIONS of rappers out there on and off Youtube who will never blow either, as a counterpoint to the argument of all the producer talent out there on youtube without success. Don't understand what kind of argument you're trying to make, there's ALWAYS great talent out there that doesn't make it regardless of what they do. Artists, directors, actors, writers, athletes, photographers, fashion designers, game designers... there are tens of millions of super talented people out there who will never be rich, because the market can only sustain the lives of so few...

Anybody who calls Premo for a beat is wasting time and money...I still remember laughing my asss off when I heard the beat he submitted to Kanye for My Beautiful Dark Fantasy...Kanye had the good sense to chuck that beat in the bushes...

The thread starts off with a premise that I can't accept.
There are good and talented song writers out there who collaborate
with producers and make something worth while.
Also I feel many Hip Hop producers throw down some drums over
some lifeless looped sample which doesn't come to life until a rapper gets on it.
I've listened to songs, where the bulk of the songs personality comes from the person on it
without the hook, the punchlines, the overall theme etc.
Then it's just one or two bars being repeated with very little variation.
For example I was listening to Mobb Deep yesterday because I hadn't
listened to them in some time and the songs are strong despite the production
being so sparse. There were songs that were literally just a rhythm track (the
drums and bass line) without Prodigy and Havoc spitting over it, it probably
wouldn't be an enjoyable listen even for the people who "just like the beats".
I don't believe that the better the production gets the weaker the rapper is.
Guys like Skyzoo and Oddisee have lush production mixed with samples and live instrumentation,
it's varied and lively YET it still has enough room for the vocalist to breath while still being
strong enough to stand on it's own if there were no rapper on it.

shut the fuc up with your rambling posts you kunt. when I said instrumental music is going to become popular I was speaking in terms of rap music. this thread is about producers and rappers, so I don't know why the fuc you come in here talking about electronic instrumental music. we aren't discussing that. OP started this thread to talk about rap producers and rap artists, and like I said, instrumental music is about to get popular in rap; we're going to start seeing successful instrumental artists within the rap genre. you're annoying as fuc

Yeah, you're right, I just didn't have enough time to write a shorter reply.
