No producers have never been more important than rappers simply cuz they're never in the lime light..the rapper will always be the star..but producers actually play more of integral role in hip hop, cuz the beat is everything..you can listen to a wack rapper with a dope beat, but you can't listen to a dope rapper with a wack beat..the only exception is Gangstarr

:wtb: Explain the gangstarr comment

I've always considered Producers more important

When Beats By the Pound left, nolimit was finished
Beats by the Pound basically created artist. Nolimit had some guys with skills, but the majority of them were street nyggas. They weren't rappers.

When the diplomats weren't getting those heatmakerz beats, they were finished imo

I'm sure you got people here who have been in the studio with artist & were completely unimpressed. The producer had to make them sound good.

Hell you can create an artist. Get someone with a good voice, give him some production, & hand him some lyrics & tell him to spit it.

anybody know whatever happened to these nikkas?

Producing has been like this for a while now.

That being said, producers need rappers. Instrumental albums don't sell numbers
The millions of dope and broke Youtube producers is proof enough that beats ain't shyt without a dope rapper...

You can't separate a dope beat from a dope rapper and vice versa...

Rappers make beats sound hotter than they truly are...

producers have other lanes outside of commercial music that they can tap into if they're good enough :ufdup:scoring games, phone apps, commercials, movies, etc.

the fukk kind of job is a rapper gonna do without a beat tho :ld:

Producer has always been more important than the rapper. This isn't new
No...
Producers and rappers are equally important...DJ Muggs isn't talked about because he gave his best beats to a rapper that "sounds like he has baby nuts"...

If DJ Muggs had given his stuff to Prodigy, Nas, and Wu Tand type rappers, he would be glorified...

A hot beat ain't shyt without a hot rapper...No beat is really that hot when you think about it...Rappers play a key role in making beats sound hotter than they really are...

If Young Chop had given "Don't Like" to some other kid, I don't think it would have blown up the way it did...Chief Keef was instrumental in making that song blow..

But this is not what we are discussing though...

We are talking about who is the most important part of a rapper and producer duo when they come together to make a song...

We are not talking about what is the better avenue to pursue between rapping and producing...

At least that is how I understood the OP...

Preemo was the main focus in Gangstarr, not Guru..that's what I meant
Guru did those Premo beats justice...

Premo is not a top producer...He was top for an era and region, but overall, Premo really isn't that good...Premo got lucky because the equipment was expensive, and most people who loved hip hop could not afford it...

I only respect Premo's scratches, and not because I think he is any good at it, but because I can't do it, so I have to give him some credit for that...

What expensive equipment did Preemo use instead of other producers..cuz guaranteed he didnt use any expensive equipment compared to other producers

To clarify,
I meant that there are a lot of VERY talented producers/beatmakers on Youtube with zero recognition, and a big reason for that is because they don't have a rapper who is good enough to bring the music to the forefront...

In essence, hot producers are a dime a dozen, but hot rappers don't come buy so easily...

The way hip hop is right now, if you are a rapper, you don't need a producer...You need a good engineer...You can easily get hot beats online for free..Just get your engineer to do his thing et voila!

but it is always better to work with a producer who loves your raps and you love his beats...That is the proven formula...

When Premo was doing his thing, the equipment he was using was not widely available to the general public...

So, Premo and other beatmakers were really in an elite club...

Now FL Studio is widely available to anybody with a computer...And Synths and MIDI keyboards are less expensive and widely available...

So, it is to tell that Premo was an amateur who sounded because of a lack of competition...

Basically, Premo is like that white dude scoring triple doubles in BBall when blacks were not allowed to play, but as soon as blacks were given the green light, dude started looking flabby-n-sick, and wondering why he isn't able to score triple doubles any more...

Premo always bagging Nas to come through...Come on dun, if your shyt was hot Nas would be there...And the stuff he gave Kanye for "My Beautiful Dark Fantasy" was thrown in the bushes...

Dude is not that talented...But he has a legacy because he was in the right place at the right time...
