I'll see you at the olympics breh, I'm def trying to make it over. Got the Rosetta Stone for Portuguese and everything. Visited Rio a few years ago and stayed my sister's friend's family, they loved us and welcomed us back. I'm cashing in on that gesture :jawalrus:

I love Salvador, one of my favorite places on the planet, depends on what you're looking for though. The night life isn't as popping as Rio, and it is more dangerous, but it's a beautiful city to me atleast. This dude does a better job of explaining than I ever could -

That Orisha stuff in that video comes from my parents home town in Nigeria.

I have to go there.

I guess this is the official Brazil thread now. Why wait four years? Go as soon as possible. If not this year Carnaval, World Cup seems like the best option.

Malta why where you in Bahia? You been to Rio to? What other parts of Brazil did you visit during your trip?

Santeria stuff is based on Yoruba beliefs as well, but people on this site don't seem to view black Latin Americans as being black, yet they have strong & persistent cultural links to Africa.

Latin Americans are more culturally African than American blacks who had every inch of it stripped away minus what went on in New Orleans.

But Latins also run away from it, denying that lineage while living it out.

It's an ill oxymoron.

I went to Rio and Salvador with friends the first time I went to Brazil, we stayed in Rio for 4 days, then drove up to Salvador after some expatriates told us it was poppin there. I went back to Brazil by myself and stayed in Salvador for a few weeks in 04, went to Juazeiro which is 6-7 hours outside of Salvador. Been in a lot of smaller towns outside of Salvador, wanted to check out the Southern states in Brazil but never got the chance, they're supposedly more European which ain't my thing but still like to see.

Brazilians are accepting it now, places like DR and PR are a long ways off though.

where are yall getting this brazilian african pride stuff from?

brazilians consider themselves brazilian like americans consider themselves american. of course they acknowledge their "Old World" roots with various traditions and acknowledgment of history, but its not on any grander scale than in the US or Western Europe. at least in my experiences. i'm curious to know what you've seen down there.

my brazilian friends were trippin off how common the question "what are you?", meaning ethnic background, pops up in casual conversation (often between strangers) in the US

I'm not really pressed to go to the Olympic Games, but I REALLY want to go to the World Cup. Idk why, but that's always excited me even when I was younger.

And Salvador has museums all over the place for African heritage.

identifying as black or african-brazilian doesn't mean you're sympathetic to african culture, or else this whole conversation would be a non-starter, since americans do the same.

i feel you on the museums tho :manny:. links?

Interesting topic :ohhh:. African Pride stuff will set you back in Brazil though. Most the poorest communities/favelas are where the Black/Afro Brazilians live and still hold most of the traditions from the African country they originated (Angola). That's where you can find the real Afro Brazilian culture. But the people there are isolated and not educated and do have same opportunities as the rest. Then there's racism.....

Still that's where you can find the Candomble/Capoeira/Axe and other aspects of the culture best. Samba came from Afro Brazilians too. Its funny how Brazil portrays that one (African) aspect of the Country as their main tourist attraction, and get rich off it while the Black Afro Brazilians continue to struggle.....

On a related note, Cuba is probably the most accepting of Black/African Culture in Latin America. I'd say they have the second most African influence after Brazil.
