Bump.

I own a 260L sized aquarium and have no problems with maintenance.

It's only a money draining hobby if you're not doing it correctly. I have the Fluval 406 filter (was thinking of upgrading to the FX4 but I don't need it) running with biohome ultimate media.

Biohome ultimate media is the GOAT. After doing my research, I purchased it and replaced it with all the original media when I redid my tank and I can already see the difference. I don't have to do as many water changes and the water is damn near crystal clear even after nearly two weeks of not doing water changes. The fish are happy and breeding in the tank and I keep my feeding to a minimal. Don't feed your fish two to three times a day. That's bullshyt and only messes up the tank. Once a day or even once every other day will suffice. Overfeeding your fish is what messes everything up and just causes infestation of snails and more water changes.

I got mollies, guppies, loaches and suckerfish and maybe tomorrow I'm going to get some African dwarf frogs.

Speaking of water changes....get something like the Python aquarium hose. After using this I can never go back to doing water changes with buckets again.

Quick update breh. Followed your advice on the biohome and had my tank cycle for a couple of weeks. Bought my first fish (Red Spotted Severum)yesterday and got a little scared because it was just staying at the bottom of tank in one spot hiding behind some plants and not wanting to eat.

Wasn’t sure if it was because the PH was high or if it was just nervous because it was in a new environment but today he seems normal swimming around the tank and even ate some flakes i put in the tank

Im a fish hobbyists at this point. Definitely makes my apartment stick out. Get complimented anytime someone visits

My mom had a 50 gallon tank with oscars when I was growing up. My first attempt was a 30 gallon was a disaster. I was buying fish without doing any research and not cleaning tank properly. Those poor fish didn’t stand a chance :to:

But started again recently. Got a 75 gallon aquarium with african cichlids. Mostly mbunas. It is true that the bigger the tank, the easier it is to maintain. The 75 gallon is so much easier to deal with than the 30 gallon.

The initial cost is alot but once your tank is set up and established its not that hard to maintain.

Weirdly the cheapest part of keeping fish is buying the actual fish

Heres some pics. Have about 20 cichlids in here

IMO don't fukk with fish. Get yourself a big tank with natural rocks and REAL plants. The plants actually clean the water. Looks great with the lights. Fish shyt and the tank gets dirty, that's where all the maintenance comes from. With plants, just have to drop in plant pellets every now and then if you don't have fish.

Also, make sure you put your light on one of those timers. Plants need a normal day-night cycle too.

I have to retract some of this. I read a book called "Ecology of the planted aquarium". This scientist did all kinds of research on setting up "low tech" tanks with just dirt, plants and fish. Works a lot better than these filtered tanks do, I'm trying to get one going now. You still need the plants, but fish are a part of it.

This video popped up on my feed and inspired me to do something similar but on a smaller scale. After one month the plants are doing good. I started to get algae so I added some shrimp and a snail seem to be eating the algae.
