I have a 55 gallon fresh water and HAD a 30 Long salt water, until my dumb ass got a fruit fly problem, and let the spray get in the saltwater tankI got a 55 gal. Ask away. It really is a money pit tho...once you think you got everything you think it takes to get started, youll need something else.
And the maintenance is aggravating

Yes, they are money pits. Especially that damn saltwater. Between live rock, salt, and substrate alone I spent close to $300.
My 55 is pretty much an African Cichlid tank, but I want to add some fresh water inverts
You have to feed Lizards cricketshad one. threw it in the bushes as the maintenance is a bytch. if you want a passive pet that's also nice to look at, get a lizard and deck out its cage/aquarium.

With most fish you just put a couple of pellets in the tank and you're good to go.

I would suggest you start with a fresh water tank, less maintenance don't have to worry about about the water balance, a filter, some plants and a couple of underwater structures and you're good. Add 2 cleaning fish and a couple of guppies and a light.
If the fish last 3 months then you can upgrade to a salt water tank.
