Watched this last month, it’s an entertaining flick for sure. Felt like Baker’s Pine Barrens at several points, I thought. I’d personally rate Red Rocket over it and while I’m not completely onboard the Best Picture hype train here, it would still be cool to see someone like him win it.
I liked how despite all the laughs had, the film was able to wrap things back around in a poignant way in the end. It’s a gut punch. All the confusion, trauma, and loneliness finally reaching its breaking point for Ani as she lets those tears fall. God knows what she had to endure in her upbringing that led her into pursuing the stripper route and sex work. There were definitely some father issues hinted at.
Fittingly, the one time she’s able to show her true self is with someone who finally empathizes with her.
I gotta wonder where Baker goes from here. He got the Palme d'Or and is now an Oscars darling who will likely dominate his respective categories. While cool, it’s kinda jarring seeing Baker finally get mainstream attention after watching his works go under the radar for so long.
Good on Neon too, because I doubt it’d be seeing this level of acclaim had A24 distributed it.
