This was pretty damn good. I have a love hate relationship with baker's films but this was easily his best film. Mikey was fantastic. It was a hilarious film. Could have trimmed 20 min.

These young actresses restoring the feeling with nudity after a pride decade post Wolf of Wall Street
Been hearing nothing but praise regarding Mikey. How did Russian Chalamet do?

A little long but a good flick. Surprisingly funny.
I think Mickey Madison will be nominated for an Oscar for this, she was great (looked good too.)
The only reason she may not will probably be because some voters may find her a little too graphic and gratuitous.

Seen this last Monday at an advanced screening. Sean Baker and his wife came in and did a Q&A after the film, even stuck around to answer audience members questions after the film. Dude was nice to talk to!

Here are some things he said:

- Sean and his wife did the casting for the film, and Mikey Madison was always the girl he had in mind for the role ever since he seen her in “once upon a time in Hollywood”. He said she stole the screen in her 15 mins and her role in scream solidified it

- For his audition tape, Mark Eidelstein (Anora husband) filmed himself naked with nothing but a beanie and glasses on. Sean’s wife said That she thinks he was naked to show that he was comfortable with nudity since he was told prior his character would be naked at some point in the film. The studio wanted to get a Russian rapper or someone famous in Russia to do the role, but Sean didn’t want this

- The actor who played Toros (Karren Karagulian) has been in all of Sean’s movies, and he had a big part with the setting and story, as he lived in Brighton beach, so he was able to use his lived experiences to make the film accurate

- The stripper Diamond in the film is actually a stripper from SoCal, she even introduced some music that was used in the soundtrack/film (The slayyyter track). She also provided her lived experience to help make the film accurate.

- Garnick (Toros henchman) was an Armenians comedian that Karren recommended to Sean. Karren liked his comedy, and even sent an IG DM praising him that he didn’t respond back until 5 years later when trying to cast him for the film

- Sean loved Yuri’s (Igor) performance in compartment no.6, and was a reason why he was casted.

- Sean loves telling these stories about sex workers and bringing it to people who typically wouldn’t be involved in that world. He thinks their stories should be showcased more on film.

The film was great, and I hope to hear it’s name called a lot during award season

Nice writeup.

The cast was really good. Torros and Garnick were hilarious.

Movie went on for too long imo. I was getting tired of the constant bickering between all the characters. None of these people got along with each other. You got anora saying motherfukka this and motherfukka that it's like we get it .. you're from NYC... Then the developing love story fell flat for me cause shyt wasn't mutual. Then the inner logic of the movie stopped making sense like how did all of these people fail to stop each other.

I think that movie Zola (2020) was a better watch with the same general theme. Felt more honest to me. There's a message being sent here so you kind of have to appreciate that message early on to really love the story. Otherwise its just a little wacky female Uncut Gems.. which isnt bad. Disappointed but Baker still one of the greats. I'd put Starlet, Red Rocket, and even Tangerine above this. Glad he's getting the mainstream recognition though.

Movie was very good, but not masterpiece status

You could knock off 15 to 20 min and still deliver same impact

7.5/8 out of 10

This was absolute fire. could be my favorite of the year. THIS is what I want movies to look like. All the characters and events felt real and realistic. The acting was excellent. The wife/mom in the end almost stole the show, from a very talented group. Got the strippers right for sure. The three act structure was perfect, maybe the 2nd act could have been cut by 10 minutes, but it was also laugh out loud funny, frequently. Reminded of course of Uncut Gems, and the only vaguely competent, vaguely menacing goons.

so without a self serving intro, I caught the whole "twist" in the first shot, just the way those two looked at each other, saw it in that instant, it was all in that one shot -maybe because I know that moment well - and I followed it the entire way, each little interaction. That was a thrilling movie to watch.
