I gotta wonder where Baker goes from here. He got the Palme d'Or and is now an Oscars darling who will likely dominate his respective categories. While cool, it’s kinda jarring seeing Baker finally get mainstream attention after watching his works go under the radar for so long.

Good on Neon too, because I doubt it’d be seeing this level of acclaim had A24 distributed it.
I figured Baker would get mainstream recognition eventually, his movies are indie but approachable and down to earth. Christopher Nolan lowkey makes weirder movies than Sean Baker (think tenet vs. tangerine). He's like a more mature version of Harmony Korine. I wonder if he will leave his "slice of life" bag and make movies with more conventional narratives.

Watched this last month, it’s an entertaining flick for sure. Felt like Baker’s Pine Barrens at several points, I thought. I’d personally rate Red Rocket over it and while I’m not completely onboard the Best Picture hype train here, it would still be cool to see someone like him win it.

I liked how despite all the laughs had, the film was able to wrap things back around in a poignant way in the end. It’s a gut punch. All the confusion, trauma, and loneliness finally reaching its breaking point for Ani as she lets those tears fall. God knows what she had to endure in her upbringing that led her into pursuing the stripper route and sex work. There were definitely some father issues hinted at.

Fittingly, the one time she’s able to show her true self is with someone who finally empathizes with her.

Mikey Madison will get all the accolades (and she deserves them) but I thought dude who played Igor really killed it.

Probably my favorite film of the year which aint saying much because this was not a great year for cinema, IMO.
Yeah wonder if Igor's actor will get more american/western roles.

Ehh I think enough stuff worth watching came out this year. 2025 is look real ehh tho.

It would still undoubtedly get attention because Mikey puts on the performance of the year, but I don’t see it being on this level. A24’s campaigns have not been the move as of late. Sing Sing, The Iron Claw, and Past Lives have all kinda suffered because of it.

I thought they were waiting for Jan to give Sing Sing a bigger push

I didn't see Past Lives, so can't speak on that. But yeah about The Iron Claw, thought that woulda been a bigger deal.
